North Pacific Cannery Historical Site to remain Closed for second season owing to COVID-19

If there is a 2021 tourism season to speak of for the North Coast this summer, one popular attraction will remain off the must see list for another year.  

That after the Board of the North Pacific Cannery Historical Site reached a decision last week to have the Port Edward site remain closed for this 2021 season.

In an information release from Friday, the Port Edward Historical Site noted how the decision, which was a unanimous one, was difficult but made as the most responsible course of action as the region continues to weather the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result, the site will continue to remain fully closed for the public for this season.

The Historical Society will use the time to focus on ongoing maintenance and make use of the recent provincial funding from the province of 273,870.

As we outlined last Thursday, the money which comes as part of the community economic recovery infrastructure program will see work take place on roofing, electrical and plumbing issues that present threats to the site and require immediate remediation.

Further work will be completed this year to cost and fundraise for a more comprehensive roofing project which is one of the key priorities for conservation and restoration towards ensuring the long term sustainability of the National Historic Site.
