Some familiar recipients and some new names make the grade for Port's 2019 Green Wave Awards

The goals of a more sustainable shipping industry were on display from five companies that call on the Port of Prince Rupert, with the Port announcing the honourees for their 2019 Green Wave Awards on Wednesday.

The Green Wave program, part of the Port's goal of mitigating environmental impact in the region is one which rewards shippers by offering discounted harbour fees to vessel owners who voluntarily invest in sustainable practices. Commercial vessels are scored on air emission control and underwater noise reduction measures and allotted savings through a three-tier system.

Last year there were 25 vessel calls that met the strict criteria to qualify for the top tier and earn the greatest savings and from those calls, five maritime interests were honoured for outstanding participation, they included past recipients COSCO, Maersk, and BC Ferries, as well as two new recipients - Ocean Network Express and Pacific Basin.

The Green Wave program has been an ongoing element of the Port's commitment to environmental mitigation since 2012 and continues to adapt its criteria to address the Port of Prince Rupert's sustainability goals as well as to raise the bar for eligibility.
