City almost ready to start work on Sixth Avenue East Bridge remediation work

The process of remediation for the Sixth Avenue East bridge is getting closer to a staring point, with Director of Operations Richard Pucci providing an update on the status of the plans for the Bridge.

The structure, one where the city is currently only allowing for east bound traffic across Hays Creek, with the westbound closure having been in place since mid December of 2023.

The topic came up as part of the Council Roundtable at the end of Monday's Council session, with Councillor Teri Forster making the inquiry on behalf of the public as to when some activity may be seen at the bridge site.

Mr. Pucci outlined the current status of reviewing bids which staff hope to finish off in the next week or so.

"We have received four proposals, we were hoping to award at this Council meeting, however just due to the nature of the work, the review is going to take an extra week.

And we have four which is good to have competition there. We need to do a lot of checks to ensure that the contractors that have come forward actually have the experience with trestle bridges and then we can look at bringing an award  to Council at the next council meeting"

Mayor Pond then asked towards a timeline for the work moving forward, with Mr. Pucci noting that it was ready to go upon the contract award.

"We would award and have it going immediately, it's ready to roll"

The City's Operations Department put the bridge work out for Bid back at the end of February. 

The original timeline from that Bid call was for completion by the end of September of this year.
