It's been a fairly fast learning curve for the Charles Hays Rainmakers, the Prince Rupert high school basketball squad has faced some stiff challenges from Lower Mainland schools over the last two days.
An opportunity that is making for a good measuring stick for Mel Bishop's squad to use as they prepare for the remainder of the Northwest basketball season.
Thursday in their tournament opener, the Rainmakers dropped a 75 - 59 decision to West Vancouver's Sentinel squad.
Friday afternoon they took on Victoria's Belmont team, bouncing back from Thursday's opener, with a convincing 77 - 56 victory over the Vancouver island squad.
While the Rainmakers were taking the pulse of the North Shore Invitational, so too was Queen Charlotte Secondary, which came close to a major upset on the opening day, edged by North Vancouver's Handsworth Secondary by a score of 79 - 70.
Queen Charlotte took their challenge to Vancouver's David Thompson Secondary. And while it appears that the Haida Gwaii squad claimed a victory in Friday action, no final score of that game was posted to the results page for the tournament by Saturday.
The Queen Charlotte squad is highly regarded in BC Basketball circles, the small Haida Gwaii school providing for a fairly energetic roster, which shows no back down, when tipping off against the larger schools of the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
Saturday will see Queen Charlotte taking on North Van's Sutherland at 10:45, a task that sees them taking on the North Vancouver team on their home court.
At the same time, the Rainmakers will be looking to secure their second win of the tournament, with a 10:45 tip off with West Vancouver's Collingwood.
Should both Charles Hays and Queen Charlotte find victory in their morning matches, then the prospect of an all Northern BC Consolation Round Final, would be set for later this afternoon.
As the North Shore Invitational Tournament enters its final day, the Consolation Round Final is scheduled for a 4 PM start.
