City comes up with In House solution for Special Events Society relocation

After a few months of looking for new digs, the members of the Special Events Society will be shifting their operations out of the downtown core, set to take up some new office space in the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre.

The move, which became required after an eviction notice of sorts from the City related to their current location in City Hall, sent the Society on a search for rental accommodations in the central area of the downtown core.

But as they noted at the November 25th City Council session, the rents downtown were proving to be a bit of a challenge for the society's budget.

At that time Mayor Brain noted that the city staff would continue to lend assistance towards that search and yesterday the plan to make the move to the Civic Centre complex was announced.

The relocation is set to take place at the end of the month and is considered a temporary measure by the Special Events Society, which still hopes for a return to the downtown area in the future.

It's been reported that the City of Prince Rupert will be covering the cost for the space and will also assist in the relocation requirements.

The Special Events Society hosts four festivals each year, the next one up is the 29th edition of the Children's Festival set for Saturday March 7th at the Civic Centre, they will also be hosting an Annual General Meeting in March, with the local community group always welcoming new members.

The Prince Rupert Arts Council which has also been told to vacate its space at City Hall is still deciding on its relocation plans.
