This past week was a period when COVID came to town with a high profile, and while it's likely the virus has probably been amongst us for a while now, this weeks news certainly captured the attention of Prince Rupert and area residents.
That with a case reported at École Roosevelt Park elementary school, a presumptive case at the Prince Rupert Shoppers Drug Mart and concerns from Lax Kw'alaams about reports of COVID from their neighbouring city to the south.
As the COVID themes played out around town, the City of Prince Rupert made use of the moment to introduce a mandatory Mask regulation for all civic operated facilities.
Beyond COVID, our five most read items also included our notes on the outcome of the Provincial election last Saturday, with incumbent NDP MLA Jennifer Rice returned to office.
As well, the next potential location for another retail cannabis location was revealed by the City, which noted that Cow Bay is on the list for a retail store if the application goes ahead.
The top item of the week however, was the account from SD52 and Northern Health of COVID at École Roosevelt Park School
SD52 advises of confirmed case of COVID-19 at Prince Rupert elementary school -- The first indication of COVID's arrival in the Prince Rupert School system was relayed on Thursday, as the Prince Rupert School District and Northern Health confirmed a case of COVID from École Roosevelt Park School. (posted October 29, 2020)
That article was followed by:
COVID advisory for local retailer gains wide traction on Social Media -- Prince Rupert's week of COVID notes began with the listing of the Prince Rupert Shoppers Drug Mart as the location of an presumptive case, the notification listed on the parent company's Loblaw's information stream (posted October 26, 2020)
City of Prince Rupert issues Masks order for all Public Indoor Civic operated facilities -- The two previous advisories of the week appear to have given City Hall cause for it's own response to COVID locally, adding a mask order for those using city operated facilities. The City of Prince Rupert's measure came a day after neighbouring Lax Kw'alaams had issued a notice for its residents of potential COVID concerns in Prince Rupert. (posted October 28, 2020)
Jennifer Rice retains North Coast for NDP, as John Horgan gains desired majority government -- While voter participation was down significantly for the 2020 provincial election, a large number of those who did cast a ballot put their X in the box for incumbent Jennifer Rice (posted October 25, 2020)
Cow Bay the potential next destination for a Cannabis Retail location -- It's still early in the application process, but the city's Cow Bay area may one day be the location for a retail cannabis store. (posted October 26, 2020)
