In what appears to be an increasing theme of late, fraudsters are finding for new approaches to try and detach British Columbians from their money.
The latest is a scam that is using the name of BC Hydro in a bid to try and steal money from unsuspecting hydro users.
The scam works by a caller claiming to represent BC Hydro contacting customers and advising that there is some form of problem with their account and that if a payment is not received, the power will be disconnected.
BC Hydro posted an item to its website earlier this month reminding their customers that the company does not collect credit card or bank account information over the phone. They also remind customers that if they receive a call from someone representing BC Hydro and they doubt the authenticity of the call, the should hang up and call back.
BC Hydro customers are asked to report any such calls by contacting the company at 1 800 BC Hydro, they also recommend contacting their local police department as well as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501
You can review more on the current scam as well as more information on BC Hydro payment policies from their website
