The Charles Hays Rainmakers have some company this week in the pages of the Vancouver Province, as the Caledonia Kermodes out of Terrace join their neighbours to the west in the Top Ten listings of the AAA Rankings.
The arrival of the Kermodes on the provincial radar highlights the strong foundation that the sport has in the Northwest and finds the two schools starting to elbow their way into the conversation on a week to week basis when it comes to High School basketball in the province.
The weekly results were posted to the Vancouver Province website on Wednesday evening and find the Rainmakers currently listed at 7th place, while the Kermodes crack the list at number 10, tied with Parksville's Ballenas Whalers, the listing for Caledonia makes for their first entry into the weekly review this season.
The AAA listings from December 16th were as follows:
(previous week ranking in brackets)
1. Southridge Storm (Surrey) (4)
2. Rick Hansen Hurricanes (Abbotsford) (2)
3. Lord Byng Grey Ghosts (Vancouver) (6)
4. St. Thomas More Knights (Burnaby) (1)
5. R. A. McMath Wildcats (Richmond) (10)
6. Mark Isfeld Ice (Courtenay) (NR)
7. Charles Hays Rainmakers (5)
8. Steveston-London Sharks (Richmond) (3)
9. MEI Eagles (Abbotsford) (8)
10. Ballenas Whalers (Parksville) (7)
10. Caledonia Kermodes (Terrace) (NR)
(BC Boys High School Basketball Association)
Charles Hays and Caledonia of course are long time rivals in the Northwest and notice of it is clearly being noted by the BC Boys High School Basketball Association, with the two teams making the grade in the Province's review of basketball in British Columbia, the competitive nature of the two teams is bound to become more accelerated as the high school season moves into January.
As we noted on the blog last week, the Rainmakers were involved in a major Vancouver area tournament taking part in the North Vancouver No Regrets event finishing with a 1 and 3 record for their weekend of work against the strong field of opposition, many of them playing at the tier AAAA level in Vancouver's competitive High School basketball scene.
Local fans of the Rainmakers might be thinking that the drop to seventh is a pretty harsh review of the weekend, considering the high tempo of the competition faced and the way the Rainmakers answered that challenge.
However that is usually the case when it comes to rankings, offering up much in the way of material to discuss to carry us all over to the next update.
This week the Rainmakers start off the holiday season with the annual Jim Ciccone Rainmaker Alunmi Tournament taking place Friday and Saturday at the Charles Hays Secondary Gymnasium.
