Blog Watching: Week ending November 19, 2023

A wet weather week for Prince Rupert saw two weather related stories grab a share of our list of the five most read items.

The First to capture the attention of readers was the first warning of the week from Environment Canada of the weather to come ; while our look at a traffic incident on the city's east side in the midst of some of the heaviest of rains also found a large audience.

It being a City Council week a few stories from our coverage of municipal government made the list of five, one focused on the fate of the still standing nuisance properties on Second West and Third.

While our look at the progress of a request to allow the  Goats of the Moby Dick Hotel to live a life of landscaping service on the bluffs adjacent the Hotel also found a large audience.

The week ended with some big news from the Port footprint in Prince Rupert, with both VOPAK/Alta Gas and Trigon finding their proposals of some note.

The top story of the week however, comes out of City Hall and the ongoing saga of the fate for Rose's and the Angus Apartments.

Buildings that Don't Come Down ... as Third West, Second West nuisances remain standing  --   The pace of demolition has been glacial since the last advisory for the two properties in October, with the building known as Rose's and the Angus Apartments still standing.  Council heard a new update from City Staff at the Tuesday meeting, with City Manager Rob Buchan noting that the workload for city workers on water infrastructure has kept them from turning off the services that is required prior to demolition.   (posted November 14, 2023

That article was followed by:

VOPAK clearing the way towards Ridley Island Energy Export Facility Final Investment Decision -- The prospects for another major development for the PRPA footprint seems good, with work moving forward for a joint project for VOPAK and AltaGas.  As that work continues some controversy is percolating related to plans from Trigon for their own energy terminal plan, with the Terminal operator taking their landlord in the PRPA to court.    (posted November 17, 2023)

Environment Canada makes it official ... tis going to be Wet, with RAINFALL Warning issued for Prince Rupert and North Coast   --  The last 72 hours have made for some pretty wet conditions for Prince Rupert residents, and in a follow up Warning on Friday, Environment Canada cautioned on more rain and some concerning winds to come for Monday.  (posted November 16, 2023

Traffic incident at Frederick and 11th Closed roads over noon hour -- The Prince Rupert RCMP took the rather rare move of using their Social Media stream to advise residents to stay clear of a traffic incident on the city's east side.  There has however yet to be any follow up notes related to the incident from Thursday.     (posted November 16, 2023

Great Goat Debate to Return to Council tonight -- A quest by the owner of the Moby Dick Hotel to bring back her pet goats for use as a landscaping crew gained a review from City Council this week.  Following a Tuesday evening presentation from owner Teresa Lee and a review of a report from planning, Council moved the prices on towards public notification, giving the public a chance to comment before Council makes a decision on the request.    (posted November 14, 2023
