Blog Watching: Week ending January 10, 2021


Health care themes dominated some of this first week of a new year of blogging, with our notes on COVID related advisories from Northern Health and the BC Centre for Disease Control accounting for three of our five stories.

Other stories that found their way onto our list of five for the first week included the release of  the Assessment of homes across the province from BC Assessment, as well as a look at what has been a very storm first week of 2021 with a number of marine systems rolling ashore over the course of the first ten days of the year.

However, COVID-19 made for the most read collection of the items of the week, starting with our look at the latest results on reported cases for the Prince Rupert area..

Post Christmas period brings jump of five COVID-19 cases reported for Prince Rupert area, with significant increases recorded for Terrace and the Nass Valley --  The latest results from the British Columbia Centre for Disease control showed an increase in reports of COVID for the Prince Rupert area and more high results for Terrace and the Nass Valley.   (posted January 7, 2021)

BC Assessments for 2021 indicate increases in valuations for many of Prince Rupert's high end neighbourhoods -- This was the week for residents of the Northwest to receive their property assessments from BC Assessment, with a varying range of results depending on where you live in the region. The Smithers/Telkwa region recorded the highest level of change on the year, while Kitimat actually saw some decreases in valuations.   (posted January 5, 2021)

Marine Blob now in place in the Pacific off of Haida Gwaii offers a hint of what wicked weather may yet come -- An ominous looking bit of satellite imagery offered up a glimpse of the seemingly never ending pattern of winter storms that have led off January. As we explored the potential path of the blob from Friday, Environment Canada followed up with another Wind Warning for the weekend for Haida Gwaii and Prince Rupert.   (posted January 8, 2021)

Northern Health moves Prince Rupert COVID-19 testing collection centre to the Ocean Centre   --  Residents of the North Coast who have been instructed to receive a COVID-19 test will now be heading for the Ocean Centre offices of Northern Health, that after a change of venue announcement from Health authority this past week   (posted January 8, 2021)

COVID puts stresses on Northern Health in the Northwest, including need for patient transfers to Prince Rupert Regional Hospital -- As hospital admissions increase for Terrace's Mills Memorial Hospital, Northern Health has begun to transfer patients to other facilities including Prince Rupert Regional Hospital    (posted January  8, 2021)
