June's calendar of celebrations flips to Thurdsay's National Aboriginal Day

Prince Rupert's waterfront will once again be the focus for celebration, with Thursday, June 21st the day for the 20th observation of National Aboriginal Day, set to run from Noon until 8 PM.

A range of activities are planned for the day at the Rotary Waterfront Park, with cultural dancers, music and family activities the focus of the eight hours to celebrate and recognize Aboriginal people across the nation.

Along with the family events, those attending the Prince Rupert event have an opportunity to collect on a range of door prizes to be offered throughout the day.

Should the weather prove not to cooperate with the day's plans, events will be moved to the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre complex on McBride Street.

The Prince Rupert National Aboriginal Day committee has also added a Free Swim to their calendar of local events, with that event set for June 23rd from 2 until 4 PM.

As we get closer to the end of the month, the Canada Day festivities loom just over the horizon and Prince Rupert's Special Events Society has issued the call for a bit of help in putting on this years celebration of Canada's 151st Birthday. 

That event is scheduled to take place July 1st, from Noon to 4 PM at the city's Mariner's Memorial Park, Special events is looking for volunteers for two shifts of the day's events from Noon to 2 or 2 until 4 PM.

Organizers would like to have potential helpers call in by June 27th to help with their planning for the day's activities.

Destination Civic Centre for National Aboriginal Day

With Rain in the forecast for much of the day, the shift is on for National Aboriginal Day in Prince Rupert as organizers take the day long celebration to the city's Jim Ciccone Civic Centre.

The full schedule of activities for the family friendly event is set to start at Noon hour, marking the start of eight hours of drumming, dance, music, traditional foods and other family activities.

The Official welcome and greetings take place at the Noon hour with civic, provincial and education officials joining in with First Nations leaders to get the day underway.

Included as part of the official ceremonies will be:

Alex Campbell, Jennifer Rice, Dave MacDonald, Tina Last, Sandy Jones, Murray Smith, Bess Leeson, Staff Sergeant Brian Donaldson and student graduate Hayden Keating.

Mayor Lee Brain was also invited to the official opening, but the Mayor is out of town for the next two weeks, another representative from the City of Prince Rupert is scheduled to step in to speak for the City.

The opening ceremonies are expected to fill the first half hour, with a wide array of events to follow through the day to the Closing  ceremony at 8 PM.

At that time Door prizes will be awarded to those that have taken in the events of the day.

The Grand Prize that those in attendance may have a chance to claim is a Round trip for two to Vancouver sponsored by Air Canada.
