A soggy setup for Seafest

From the don't shoot the messenger department, a quick glance at the forecast for the weekend.

One which suggests, that as the events get underway this evening, that it may be a Soggy celebration for Seafest activities.

Some no doubt destined for a change of venue to the indoors, while others will go forward, though perhaps with a full complement of umbrellas and rain gear.

However, as Rupertites are more than aware, regardless of the elements the show will go on and who knows, perhaps the fine forecasters of Environment Canada may yet be proven wrong (with a bit of luck)

So with or without an umbrella, here is our previous post this week on the festivities planned as Prince Rupert prepares for its annual launch of the summer season.

A full weekend ahead for Seafest

As we outlined on the blog a few weeks back, preparations for the 2013 edition of Seafest,  were almost complete and with but a few days to go until the festivities kick off, the Special Events Society has outlined some of the events available from Thursday to Sunday for the 35th presentation of the City's kick off to summer..

Among some of the highlights of the weekend ahead, Thursday's Block Party on the City Hall block of 3rd Avenue West, a Family event featuring games, music, a bouncy castle and carnival treats (fair weather event, will be cancelled in Heavy Rain)

Friday features the Seniors Tea, Band concert at Rupert Square, 3 on 3 basketball and Metalshop concert at the Lester Centre.

Saturday kicks off with a Pancake Breakfast at the Masonic Hall, the Seafest Parade at 11 AM, Quick and Daring construction, events on Third Avenue, a Fresh Air Cinema at Patullo Field and a Metalshop encore on Saturday night at the Lester Centre.

Sunday features a variety of waterfront events from music concerts to the water events.

As well  the Royal Canadian Navy pulls into town for the weekend, with HMCS Whitehorse available for public tours Friday through Sunday from 1 to 4 PM.

Seafest planning almost complete as Rupert's weekend nears

While many Rupertites have scattered for the Victoria Day Long weekend, three weeks from now will provide for a different story as residents and visitors alike get set to take in the 35the Edition of the always popular Seafest celebrations.

This years theme for Seafest is Celebrating a Community of Volunteers, which considering the volume of them required to put the weekend itself on, seems rather appropriate.

The four day event runs from Thursday, June 6th until Sunday, June 9th and features a number of events to pencil into your must attend list for young and old alike

From Friday's Seniors Tea to Blockstock the Friday evening music festival for youth, the weekend of activities will provide for a full calendar heading into Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday features the key event to that day's schedule with the Seafest Parade an event that attracts participants and parade watchers from across the Northwest and beyond.

This years route, like those of most years will have the parade travel from the Court House down Second Avenue with a turn on Sixth  and back down Third Avenue to return to the starting point.

Those looking to participate in the Parade must have their registration fee and applications in by Wednesday June 5th, you can learn more about the parade  here, here and here.

The Special Events Society has commissioned the construction of a new parade float and it's hoped that the job  will be finished in time for the new float to make its debut at the parade on the 8th.

From Saturday's parade the attention shifts to Third Avenue which is turned over to the city's residents as the majority of the street is blocked off for the huge festival of events, food stands and entertainment spots.

Sunday's focus turns towards the waterfront with the Sailpast and Fly Over, Quick and Daring Races, Swim for Survival competition and Kayak Races to name a few.

And to get into the spirit of Seafest local merchants can take part in the Seafest Window decorating contest, which is sponsored by the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce.

Judging for that contest takes place on Friday, June 7th from 4 to 5 PM.  You can find out more information on how to get your business on the list of windows to be judged by contacting the Chamber of Commerce.
