Rampage and Ice Demons set for reunion, as CIHL sets playoff match ups

The Prince Rupert Rampage will be able to put the final weekend of the regular season behind them in pretty quick fashion, as the CIHL squad makes preparations for Friday night's launch of the playoffs and a trip down the road to take on the Kitimat Ice Demons.

The Rhinos finished off the year suffering a rough night in Smithers and an 11-6 loss to the Steelheads, though with little on the line for the Rampage, a mulligan on the night is probably the best approach to take, shaking off the night as not much more than a scrimmage, one that left some hints as to where they need to firm things up as the playoffs arrive.

Heading into the playoffs the match up would seem to favour the lads from Prince Rupert, the Ice Demons had a very frustrating season, going without a win over the course of the sixteen regular season games.

Kitimat also had some struggles in their 4 head to head games with the Rampage, as Prince Rupert outscored them by a margin of 27 to 6.

However, as the ages old hockey saying goes, the playoffs indeed are a brand new season.

For Kitimat the second act for the year offers a chance to put all of there regular season woes behind and play the role of spoiler for the dreams of the fans of the Rampage, who may be hoping for a long run into the playoff season and on to the Calder Cup.

The first game of the Best of Three Series is set for the Tamitik Arena on Saturday night with a puck drop at 7:30 PM. According to the Rampage Facebook page the two teams then return to Prince Rupert for game two scheduled for Friday, February 10th. If required a third game will take place Saturday the 11th at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre.

The other match-up for the first playoff round will see the Quesnel Kangaroos taking on the Smithers Steelheads, with that series starting on February 4th.

The Steelheads will be a somewhat angry squad heading into their playoff round, despite a 24 point season, they had to wait for the final game of the regular season to play out in order to learn their fate.

And when the dust had settled and  the number crunchers at the league office had finished with their mathematical equations, it was the Williams Lake Stampeders who were found sitting atop the CIHL standings as the season ended.

That left the Steelheads in second place as the CIHL split the playoff season into east and west battles, with Smithers shifting to the showdown with the Kangaroos.

All three teams had 24 points, but the CIHL dug deep into its regulations and perhaps consulted any number of oracles to determine the 1-2-3 placement, making for a bit of a confusing situation for the first few days following the end of the season.

And once the decision was delivered, the final word from the CIHL head office proved to be a conclusion that left the River Kings somewhat disappointed as to how it all worked out.

With the official CIHL ruling, Terrace and Williams Lake will now await the winners of the Best of three series that get underway this weekend.

Playoff results can be found on our CIHL Playoff Archive page found here.

More notes on the Rampage and the CIHL can be reviewed on our Rampage page.

Terrace RCMP credit pubic assistance in quick arrest of home invasion suspect

Terrace RCMP have a 20 year old man in custody in the wake of a violent home invasion that had occurred in the community in the early hours of Monday morning.

Yesterday, the Terrace detachment outlined the details of the incident which occurred in the Park Avenue area of the city and posted photos of a person of interest related to the events.

Residents of the community were quick to action and within two hours of that information being provided to the public, a number of tips had been received by Terrace RCMP leading to an arrest by 7 PM last evening.

In a statement issued today by the Inspector in charge of the detachment, Inspector Sydney Lecky credited both the assistance of the public and the hard work of all those involved in the investigation for the quick results that effected an arrest of the individual believed to be involved in the home invasion.

"Tips from the public quickly led to an identification of the man. The images were released at 5 pm and by 7 pm we had made the arrest. I am very proud of the team work and diligence of the Terrace Detachment members who have been working nonstop on this investigation.

The information provided by the community of Terrace was the piece of the puzzle we needed to make this arrest. This is one of those rare events which understandably causes fear in a community. I think we are all relieved that a person is in custody for this very serious incident"

As part of their investigation, the Terrace RCMP had brought in a number of resources, including the Forensics Unit that is based out of Prince Rupert.

Some of the notes from the Terrace media related to the Monday incident can be reviewed below:

Rice / Pond offer economic views through statements and Facebook posts

Economic themes are making for the first salvos in the political battle for the North Coast seat in the British Columbia Legislature, with incumbent MLA Jennifer Rice leading off some of the discussion with her view on the Northwest economy and what she believes is the poor handling of economic issues in the region by the BC Liberal government.

Her commentary came as part of the official announcement of her new duties as an NDP shadow critic for northern and rural economic issues.

From her observations, Ms. Rice, while noting of some of the economic potential on the horizon, adopted mostly a theme of a Prince Rupert that has been abandoned by Premier Christy Clark and her fellow Liberal cabinet colleagues.

“Northern and rural communities have been left behind by Christy Clark because she puts rewarding friends and donors above the best interests of ordinary people. “That’s why we’ve seen nine out of 10 new jobs go to Metro Vancouver at a time when the rest of the province is struggling. Because that’s where Christy Clark’s big real estate donors live and that’s where they make their money.

“We need leadership that is serious about building the economy throughout the province, not just in metro Vancouver. And I’m part of a team that will deliver that.

On the theme of the local economy, Ms. Rice looks back at what she calls the last 10 years of failed leadership by BC Liberals, suggesting it would seem, that the Premier and the Liberals have been missing through much of the struggles of the riding over the last decade.

“Prince Rupert once had a robust economy and thriving population but has been neglected by the Christy Clark government for far too long. We have huge potential with the next phase of the Fairview Container Port Terminal expansion and Alta Gas’ propane export terminal. I am looking forward to working with port partners, local governments and local communities to facilitate economic development that works for everyone.”

“Christy Clark has had six years to help Prince Rupert and other northern communities, and she’s failed. We’re no better off with her than we were with the previous 10 years of failed B.C. Liberal leadership.

The MLA also expanded her overview to areas of Haida Gwaii and the Central Coast, with some thoughts directed towards issues related to BC Hydro and BC Ferries.

“Life has become harder because northern families and northern communities have been hit the hardest by Christy Clark’s unfair fee hikes and bill increases – like increases to B.C. Hydro rates and ferry fares. Cuts to B.C. Ferries have negatively impacted the economies of Bella Coola and Haida Gwaii; these cuts are driving away jobs and forcing people to choose between paying rent and paying for heat and food.

The only other competitor for the seat at the moment is BC Liberal Herb Pond and he was quick to pick up on some of Ms. Rice's themes this week, offering up his counterpoint to her talking points by way of a Facebook page posting.

His opening commentary took the NDP candidate's view of the local issues to task, mixing a review of some of the past troubles that had been found in the region, while offering up a more positive review of the current prospects for the North Coast and Prince Rupert in particular.

While accepting your new assignment as critic for northern economic development, you claimed that the North Coast is "no better off than we were 10 years ago".

History disagrees with you, and so do I. Ten years ago in Prince Rupert, hundreds of jobs had been lost, hundreds of families had been forced to leave, and countless storefronts had been left empty.

The pulp mill had closed, a major fish plant burned down, access to salmon was reduced, and coal shipments had dropped off.

Mr Pond further called upon his time as Mayor to remind the NDP candidate of the recent history of the region and where Prince Rupert finds itself today, compared to ten years ago.

Seniors saw the value of their homes plummet. Parents felt that their children had no future. High school students, including all four of my children, were forced to leave after graduation without a hope for a job here. That’s why I took on the challenge of mayor.

During the darkest economic times in our history, our team at City Hall had to make extremely difficult decisions just to keep the lights on. But despite the unbelievable hardships, people never lost hope or optimism in this place. So before you claim that we are no better off, please reflect on our resilience. Be reminded of how far we have come.

The Liberal candidate then shifted his focus towards the future, offering up a bit of a laundry list of sorts related to some of the recent announcements out of City Hall and the District of Port Edward, as well as from local First Nations communities as to the promise of better times to come.

We are finally starting to realize our potential – thanks to the hardworking women and men of the waterfront, Fairview Container Terminal is growing and is expected to create 300 more high quality full-time jobs (they happen to be celebrating 10 years of success in September).

AltaGas has committed to investing half a billion dollars which will create 50 long-term jobs.

Prince Rupert’s mayor and council have secured provincial and federal investments to repave McBride, 2nd & 3rd Avenue, replace our 100 year old water system, construct 60 new affordable housing units, upgrade our airport, and open a new public marina.

Lax Kw’alaams has paved their road network and built a new school. Metlakatla, Kitkatla and Port Edward now have provincial funding to construct new affordable and seniors’ housing.

The social media based duel currently coming from their keyboards appears to be setting the tone for the campaign ahead.

Hopefully, the two candidates will be able to break away from their computers for a bit and engage in one, or preferably a number of public community debates in Prince Rupert and other areas of the North Coast Riding, something that could offer up some freedom from talking points.

So far the conversation has been focused on past events, or how they have been handled, making for what has mostly been an opening period of finger pointing.

Would be voters still don't have any indication as to what it is that either candidate might have to offer to improve the local economy, or how they  would address the many social issues found in he North Coast riding.

What residents of the region might be hoping to see is how the discussion might move out of the realm of political rhetoric and more towards what ways both candidates would seek to change the current situation.

A public forum setting would offer the chance for residents to not only hear from both candidates as they expand on their positions, but also allow them to become active participants, raising the questions that are of major concern to them.

That kind of back and forth with the voters would also provide an opportunity for the two candidates to not only move away from their talking points, but to hear the concerns from those they seek to represent.

Hearing from the public is something that might offer a valuable bit of feedback and would give both Ms. Rice and Mr. Pond the opportunity to dig deeper into the issues and explain how they might best become advocates for the voters across the region.

Prince Rupert radio position reportedly filled, amid cross Canada cuts from Bell Media

EZ Rock Prince Rupert is still making
use of Terrace programming for the
audience on the North Coast
It's been over one month now since original programming beamed, or streamed out of the Cow Bay studios of EZ Rock in Prince Rupert, with no indication from Bell Media Northwest when the microphones will be turned back on locally.

Though if yesterday is any indication, they may have had a few other things on their mind of late, other than sharing the news if they have filled a spot at a distant radio station in the Northwest corner of British Columbia.

Yesterday, Bell Media cleared out the offices of a number staff members at over twenty four media properties that they operate across Canada, with some of the most recognizable names in Canadian radio and television among the latest in job cuts in an industry that has been facing some very tough times in recent years.

One of the reasons cited for the large scale layoffs is the CRTC's regulations including  ruling on Super Bowl ads, which Bell says has meant reduced revenue for the company.

Locally, EZ Rock continues to offer programming coming from their Terrace studios for listeners in Prince Rupert. However that may soon be about to change with a short notice from the Bell Media jobs page that indicates that as of January21st the position had been filled.

There is no indication on the EZ Rock Prince Rupert website as to when Bell Media plans to return to local programming for the region.

That means that for the moment, the only locally produced radio programming in Prince Rupert comes out of the CBC Daybreak North studios, where Carolina de Ryk co-hosts the CBC's two and half hour morning information show from 6 to 8:30 sharing the news flow with Robert Doane in Prince George.

Tuesday Incident outside of CityWest building results in closed offices, streets in downtown area

Emergency Responders were called into action late in the afternoon on Tuesday, as an accident outside of the Prince Rupert offices of CityWest resulted in a gas leak in the immediate area.

The incident led to the evacuation of the CityWest offices and resulted in the closure of streets in close proximity to the scene.

The background to the incident is provided in a short update posted to the CityWest Facebook page, with CityWest thanking the responding personnel from the RCMP and Prince Rupert Fire/Rescue for their work on the situation.

As workers from Pacific Northern Gas responded to the gas issues situated behind the CityWest offices, traffic along 2nd Avenue West was being re-routed away from the area near 7-11 and the Ocean Centre mall.
