Blog Watching: Week ending May 10, 2020

The path out of COVID times carried much of the theme for the week with the Province of British Columbia outlining the plan ahead through the BC Restart plan at mid week.

The signal from the Premier seemed to break open much of the local conversation on the topic, with one theme dominating the week, that being the potential for a Lax Kw'alaams led roadblock on Highway 16, which was a major part of a recent Webinar hosted by the Council of Haida Nation.

By weeks end there were still no firm details on the roadblock plans, but for Lax Kw'alaams residents the week was all about a return to normalcy, with the Band lifting the measures in place and allowing for travel again for members in and out of the community, with regular Ferry service to return on Monday.

As the week moved forward, Prince Rupert residents heard word of the pending return of scheduled air service to the Digby Island Airport.

We also explored the impact of the closure of the Chances Gaming centre during the COVID emergency and how it many impact on revenues for the City and funding for community groups.

Also finding a large audience this week, was our look at an appearance from Mayor Lee Brain, who provided for a lengthy review of the COVID situation in Prince Rupert over the last six weeks, as well as notes on some other civic issues.

But when it came to the most read item of the last week, it was the plans for a Roadblock that captured the most interest.

Lax Kw'alaams could decide on Highway 16 roadblock plans this week -- The week began with some news made from the Sunday night Webinar hosted by the Council of Haida Nations, where Lax Kw'alaams Mayor Garry Reece outlined that he and his council would be discussing roadblock plans for Highway 16. By the end of the week there had been no further information on the roadblock plans, but in the community itself the lock down was lifted, ferry service was on the verge of being restored to a normal schedule and residents were allowed to come and go as they wished.   (posted  May 4, 2020)
