Blog Watching: Week ending July 2, 2023

It's by far the most discussed topic in the city these days, the state of the debris field and the lack of progress towards its removal from the heart of the downtown core.

The issue made for a short update from Mayor Herb Pond two weeks ago, but so far, as we noted two weeks later, there's not much to see when it comes to activity.

Our update this week, making for the most read story of the week by a large margin.

It having been a City Council week, a few items from Council made for much interest, the top of the list coming from the annual release of Financial information, a document which brought one resident of the city to the Monday Council session to ask some questions.

The City's plans for the sale of a lot on First Avenue West overlooking Cow Bay also found a large audience, as did our look at the City's plans for a new parking lot for George Hills Way adjacent to Cow Bay.

And the workers at the range of shipping terminals on the North Coast, members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union issued and then followed up on a trike notice as of Saturday ay 8 AM

The top story of the week however was related to the still piled debris of the Belmont Hotel.

Two weeks on since announcement that Belmont debris may be removed, time for an update and timeline on demolitions. plans --  While it was a closing topic for the June 12th City of Prince Rupert Council meeting, the lack of progress on the removal of the Belmont debris at the Third Avenue West lot, did not get a return shout out or updated timeline at this pat weeks Council meeting.       (posted June  26, 2023

That article was followed by:

SOFI report shows one million dollar increase to civic payroll totals for 2022 -- The annual release of the City of Prince Ruperts Financial information came this week, with the City releasing a range of documentation, with our look at the City Council salaries and payments to suppliers also gaining a large readership this week.   (posted  June 26, 2023)

ILWU serves 72 hour strike notice to BC Maritime Employers Association -- BC's Port workers put in motion their plans to cease operations at BC's Port terminals on Wednesday and with the tick of the clock to 8 AM on Saturday, the docks including those in Prince Rupert went silent (posted June 28, 2023

City Owned Cow Bay Area land put up for Distribution at price of $154,000 -- A lot on First Avenue West overlooking the Cow Bay Parkin lot as been put up for sale by the City of Prince Rupert. Earlier in the week the City also introduced its plans to add some parking to the area, partially related to the disposition. With the new lot to be created on George Hills Way.     (posted June 29, 2023

SOFI questions for Council from Monday night public comment period to gain personal reply --  The release of the City's Financial information made for some reading for one city resident, who used the public comment period  on Monday to raise a number of questions to the material.   (posted June 30, 2023

No reports of damage or concerns from 4.0 magnitude earthquake West of Haida Gwaii Saturday morning

Saturday morning brought a 3 AM wake up call with a small
earthquake at 4.0 mg recorded west of Haida Gwaii

Residents of Haida Gwaii had an another in a string of recent temblors rattle along their west coast this morning, though at 4.0 magnitude, it did not generate any reports of damage, nor any concern towards any potential tsunami activity.

The epicentre of the seismic event was  78 kilometres west of Port Clements listed as 199.5 kilometres to the west of Prime Rupert. The event rattle the fault lines along the west side of Haida Gwaii at 3 AM

The temblor had a depth of 10 kilometres

You can review some of the recent seismic events along the BC coast from our archive page.

Activity at DP World Farview and many other terminals comes to a stop, as ILWU members take strike action

See updates on the status of labour negotiations at BC Ports from our update page here

The Ports of British Columbia are all but ghost towns and it has nothing to do with the Canada Day holiday, but rather, comes with the members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union members making good on their Strike Notice this morning.

Activity on the waterfront along the BC coast came to stop at 8AM as the more than 7,000 members took to their picket lines.

A move which as our video above shows, left the DP World Terminal quiet, the cacophony of noise of a working port, instead features near silence and the Giant Cranes that now introduce Prince Rupert to the world remain fixed in their resting position.

For Prince Rupert, the two most prominent locations for the lines were at Scott Road and the road adjacent the Rail line into the DP World Facility

Facilities on Ridley Island are also subject to the labour stoppage with the exception of Prince Rupert Grain, that through a previous arrangement, the same will be the case for Cruise Ship Terminals in the province.

Shortly after the workers walked off the job, the BC Marine Employers Association which represents Port Terminal operators along the BC Coast issued a brief statement towards the labour dispute.

There is no official statement from the ILWU posted to their website as of yet, however on an unofficial  Social Media Stream a message to the membership from ILWU President Rob Ashton has been posted.

As we noted yesterday, Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach offered his support to the ILWU membership with a statement on Friday,

That statement was one of a number of letters of solidarity that the ILWU posted to their website on Friday evening as the deadline to the strike call began to tick down.

The strike action of this morning came following a vote in mid-June that gave the ILWU negotiators a 99% plus mandate to take job action if required.

There has been no statement from the Federal Government yet in this first day of the Port labour stoppage, though as the BCMEA statement observed, Federal mediators stand ready to assist in the negotiations should the two sides look to resume them.
