Terrace claims first overall in CIHL after convincing win in Prince Rupert

There was lots of offence to see at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre this weekend, unfortunately for fans of the Prince Rupert Ramapge however, in the Friday contest the bulk of the scoring went the way of the visiting Terrace River Kings, who doubled the score on the Rhinos 10-5 and with the victory secured first place over all as the CIHL regular season came to an end one night later.

The highly anticipated showdown did not disappoint the large crowd at the Jim, with lots of scoring and a very physical game the earmarks of another contest between the two long time rivals of the Northwest.

Friday's showcase offered the Rampage a chance to move into First Place for the final night to follow on Saturday, but the guests had no intention of being evicted from the penthouse, with some close hockey in period one which delivered but one goal, that for the visitors.

Period Two saw the ink flowing for the score sheet, with nine goals marking the middle frame, the Rampage opening their night up with Kory Movold's marker just past the one minute mark, with assists going to Teal Burns and Tyler Ostrom.

Ostrom would pick up an unassisted marker about eight minutes later, followed by another Kory Movold goal, this one with helpers from Teal Burns and Marcus Atchison.

Burns was next up on the Rampage goals list picking up the fourth goal of the game for the Rampage at 14:24 with assists from Kolton Chasse and Kory Movold.

And while the Rhinos were finding their scoring groove, the River Kings were matching them along the way, picking up five markers of their own to take a 6-4 lead into the dressing room heading towards the third period.

The final twenty minutes belonged to the River Kings who recorded four straight goals in the first eleven minutes, a period of the game marked by a number of penalties as the Rampage frustrations spilled out onto the ice, with the Prince Rupert squad assessed all but three of the eleven penalties assessed, four of them to Jim Lessard who picked up a fighting major and a misconduct.

Jeremy Boot wrapped up the Rampage scoring on the night at 16:49 with an assist to Tyler Ostrom, making the final 10-5 Terrace.

When it came to facing down the offence, the Ramapge's Kieran Sharpe had a much busier night in the nets than that forPatrick Leal for Terrace.

The River Kings directed 32 shots the way of the Prince Rupert net minder, while the Ramapge only had half that many making for challenges for Leal.

The full boxscore for Friday can be found here.

With Terrace securing their top status on Friday, there was less on the line for the Ramapge when Hazelton came to town on Saturday, though the Wolverines and Rhinos did send the final game off in an overtime thriller.

The Prince Rupert squad ending the regular season on a winning note with the 6-5 OT victory.

Hazelton held the lead after twenty minutes with two goals, with only one answer from the Ramapge by way of Kory Movold's marker at 2:35 assisted by Tyler Ostrom.

Prince Rupert took the lead midway through the second as Kolton Chasse scored a power play marker at 6:30 of the second period, with assists from Tyler Ostrom and Teal Burns.

Burns would score two minutes later with helpers from Jacob Santurbano and Kale Burns.

The Wolverines however, who have been a very competitive team through the season stayed tight with the Ramapge picking up two goals of their own, to set the score at 4-3 Hazelton heading into the final frame.

The two teams exchanged goals early in the third, with Teal Burns picking up an unassisted goal at 4:19.

The Wolverines however held hard to their 5-4 lead until the last thirty seconds of play when a Power play marker for Kory Movold off an assist from Tyler Ostrom put the game into overtime.

The extra frame came to an end at 3:48 when Teal Burns with a helper from Tyler Osrom put the Rampage into the win column.

The teams split the penalty totals at 36 minutes each with the Wolverines assessed 10 penalty calls, the Rampage six.  The middle frame making for most of those numbers as emotions boiled over for the two teams.

Kieran Sharpe claimed the OT victory for the Rampage, facing 16 shots on the night, Keaon Wilson was stellar in the Wolverine nets, turning aside all but six of the 53 shots that he faced during the near 64 minutes of play.

Rampage/Wolverines scoring summary can be reviewed here.

The road to the Coy Cup Senior Men's Championship in Quesnel, will start this month with the CIHL playoffs, so far the CIHL has not released the schedule and details for the 2019-20 Playoff Round.

City of Prince Rupert seeks public input from Draft Study on Childcare

The next phase of the City of Prince Rupert's Child Care study was launched late Friday afternoon with the City putting out the call for feedback on the recently completed Child Care Assessment and Action Plan Draft Study.

The 47 page report was released just prior to the weekend and covers a broad range of themes when it comes to the status of child care in the community.

The project was compiled by Watson Projects, working in collaboration with the City of Prince Rupert, Kate Toye, Liliana Dragowska Planning and Engagement and Cherie Enns Consulting.

The Draft program came together following interviews and feedback with a number of participants including parents, children, child care providers, city staff, elected officials and other stakeholders.

The City introduced the Draft Study through the Civic website and social media platforms.

As part of its findings, the Draft Study listed five areas where there are gaps in community Child Care, included on the list were:

Centre-based child care for infants & toddlers.

Flexible child care programs to accommodate those working shifts & non-traditional work hours.

Child care hubs where child care is co-located with schools, family service organizations, multi- family residential housing or recreation programming.

Awareness of child care programs & affordability benefits.

Recognition of barriers to space creation, most significantly staff shortages.

At the current time there are 32 programs of all types in place in the city, providing for 395 spaces in the community for all age groupings.

Toward support in child care space creation, the participants in the project offered four areas where the City of Prince Rupert could take action.

Strengthen Child Care Policy. Establishing formal child care space policies within the City’s Official Community Plan will guide the City and community in realizing opportunities to address local child care needs within the context of future growth and development decisions. Strong City policy also helps support community programs and funding applications.

Remove Regulatory Barriers & Create Incentives: Enable the creation of new child care spaces in the community by establishing land-use regulations that permit child care spaces in all commercial and public zones. Revitalization tax exemptions are used to create incentives for the development of new child care spaces.

Support Space Creation: The City can provide valuable support and resources to community partners in developing additional child care spaces in the community, including leveraging available funding to create child care space for lease in/on a City-owned facility or property.

Communications, Partnerships & Advocacy: Work in partnership with local organizations to promote access to child care resources and information, advocate to higher levels of government, and encourage continued dialogue in the community to ensure local child care needs stay at the forefront of the community growth conversation.

Looking towards future child care needs and based on data projections from BC stats, the report has determined that Prince Rupert requires an additional 49 licensed child care spaces to meet current local demand and to achieve a 25 percent access rate for children 0 to 12 years old.

The Draft Report also makes notes of recent projections locally for increased economic growth and employment opportunities, suggesting that the need for Child care in the future will shift according to the change in population that could come from those employment additions.

And while local government does not have a legislative role when it comes to child care. The document did take a look at the areas of policies and regulations as well as to were participants believe the City of Prince Rupert should become involved in the access to Daycare discussion

Among the roles where the pre draft participants suggested the City should concentrate on were:

Build community awareness by communicating where parents can go to access child care.

Inventory and assess the empty buildings in the community for suitability for new spaces. Review zoning regulations to encourage child care in all areas of the city and work on bylaws to encourage child care space creation

Consider policy development that promotes space creation for child care needs and reflects the unique people, community and cultures in Prince Rupert

Use City-owned buildings to, directly and indirectly, create space for child care and programs

Review bus service and routes for ease of access to child care spaces

Partner organizations such as Coast Mountain College to advocate for ECE programming

Look at our streets and neighbourhood safety, particularly where child cares spaces exist.

The document also provides for a range of data, graphs, background information and also examines some of the success stories in creating child care spaces that are found in other communities in Northern British Columbia

You can explore the full scope of the document here

To provide for some early feedback you can complete  a 3 question poll that is hosted by the Rupert Talks community engagement portal.

The themes of the three questions include:

Do you think the plan accurately reflects Prince Rupert’s child care needs & space requirements?

Are there actions that you / your organization can take to assist with meeting Prince Rupert’s space creation targets?

Do you have other thoughts on the draft plan?

Later this month the City will be hosting a Child Care Action Plan Open House, set to take place on Thursday, February 20th from 6 to 9 PM at the Lester Centre.

Those who take in the presentation will hear more about the draft plan, learn of some of the success stories from other communities and take part in the discussion on future goals for Prince Rupert.

Those in attendance will have an opportunity to be entered in a draw for a $500 RESP from Northern Savings Credit Union.

Blog Watching: Week ending February 2, 2020

The flu, the weather and moves to try to get a handle on the number of Prince Rupert's unsightly properties made for some of the news themes in the city this week.

The seasonal flu has made its presence known on the North Coast, as an outbreak at the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital gave Northern Health cause to limit visitors and reschedule elective appointments.

City Councillors heard an update from City Manager Robert Long on some solutions to the ongoing concerns over unsightly properties, as the city staff member responded to some inquiries from Councillor Barry Cunningham.

With the Coastal GasLink pipeline still making for some controversy in the Bulkley Valley, Premier John Horgan has called on a familiar name in the Valley, asking Nathan Cullen to act as a liaison for the province with Wet'suwet'en Chiefs in the region.

The winds roared around the North Coast this week, as a Thursday morning windstorm delayed ferry sailings, toppled a few trees put the landfill site and a range of waterfront industries in a holding pattern for much of the day.

And it was Hockey Night in Prince Rupert on Friday with a showdown between two of the fiercest rivals in the league battling it out at the Jim, with the Terrace River Kings taking on the Rampage in a game that would determine first place at the end of the CIHL regular season.

However, the most read story of the week was all about the flu and the impact it has had on health care at the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital

Influenza outbreak reported as declared at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital -- An outbreak of the seasonal flu arrived at the Prince Rupert Hospital, with hospital officials taking a number of precautions out of an abundance of caution. Among the measures, postponement of a number of elective appointments and procedures, as well as a request that all visits to the hospital be avoided. The emergency department however remained open for those in need of assistance. Later that same day, Northern Health provided for a wider overview of their measures in Prince Rupert as well as reassurances that the local situation had nothing to do with with the coronavirus issues coming from China.  (posted  January 28 , 2020)

That article was followed by:

Owners of Unsightly properties put on notice, Council set to take up issue of enforcement in 2020 -- It has been one of the most discussed topics at City Council for years, yet one that never seems to see much action. That may change in 2020, as City staff prepare to bring a plan to Council on enforcement of bylaws related to unsightly properties in the city.  (posted January 29, 2020  )

Nathan Cullen tapped to be British Columbia liaison with Wet'suwet'en Chiefs   -- Premier John Horgan asked former NDP MP Nathan Cullen to act as a liaison with Heredtiary chiefs, as the NDP government seeks to find a solution to the impasse over the Coastal GasLink pipeline issue.   (posted January 27, 2020)

Thursday Windstorm leaves its mark on Prince Rupert  -- While Environment Canada has offered up a number of weather warnings this winter that never quite panned out, their Warning of Wednesday of some approaching weather proved spot, on as strong windstorm found its way through the city this week.  (posted January 30, 2020 )

CIHL Showdown at the Jim set for tonight with First Place a potential prize  -- Friday night brought what would be a pivotal game in the CIHL regular season to the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre, as the hometown Rampage faced off against the visiting River Kings. The night however would not go the way the boisterous fans in the Jim would want, with the visitors taking the two points and first place in the regular season with an 10-5 victory.  (posted  January 31, 2020)

Airplane incident closes Northwest Regional Airport

Travellers in and out of Terrace today have been a frustrated group for much of the day.

That after a Friday night incident which saw the nose gear of an arriving WestJet airplane partially collapse upon arrival, leaving the plane to rest on the runway in a location that has hampered flight operations.

None of the 42 passengers or 4 crew members aboard were reported injured as a result of the incident. Terrace is served by the Bombardier Q400 service.

The Bombardier Q400
(From WestJet website)

According to the notes from the flight tracking service Flight Aware, the WestJet Flight had a late Gate Departure in Vancouver and arrived in Terrace at 9:06 PM

The first indication of the Friday night event came through social media which flagged the issue for those travelling to and from the region.

As a result of the incident the WestJet flight for Saturday was cancelled, as were Air Canada flights scheduled for the day.

In total, four flights were cancelled at the airport from late Friday  night through today. The delay in resolving the situation comes as the airport awaited the arrival of WestJet service technicians to assist in the move of the plane.

The Northwest Regional Airport Website offers no background on the Friday night incident, nor does it have any updates on the status of the airport.

According to the YVR Departures page, Air Canada Flight AC8242 is scheduled for departure at 5:25PM tonight.

As Mounties observe 100 years of service to British Columbia, Province and communities celebrate RCMP Appreciation Day

It's a twin commemoration today, as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police observe the 100th year of their service to the province of British Columbia, today's observance coming as the Province puts in place it's annual tribute to the Force in the way of RCMP Appreciation Day.

As part of last year's Legislation approvals, a Member's Bill M 211was approved that will mark February1st as the date of the annual salute to the work of the RCMP in the province of British Columbia.

While the Federal Force has been in the province for the last 100 years, they took over full time policing duties in many British Columbians in 1950 when the BC Provincial Police Force was disbanded.

That a rather controversial moment in British Columbia history.

The Bill to recognize the RCMP was introduced in the Legislature last year by Vernon area MLA's, it was a grass roots campaign in the Vernon area which got the process rolling to make for the dedicated day of Thanks to the Force

In a statement issued today, Deputy Commissioner Jennifer Strachan, the Commanding Office for the RCMP in British Columbia offered up the thanks of her members for the show of support from the province.

The RCMP has a strong history in the province of BC and I feel privilege that our commitment to keep you safe is being recognized in this way. In fact, it was in 1950 that the RCMP took over policing duties from the BC Provincial Police marking the important milestone of serving BC for 70 years. Since that time, the province and the RCMP have grown and evolved together.

As your provincial police force, we are proud to serve, live in, and support communities throughout British Columbia. We collaborate with local groups and businesses to adapt what we do best, and we create local solutions that meet the needs and priorities of the region.

Around the province, many communities have taken to the Social media platforms to pay tribute to the work of the RCMP in their community.

So far today in the Northwest, the Terrace City Council is the only one of the major communities in the region which has offered up thanks for the work of the members of the RCMP detachment.

The Day has also been observed by way of twitter as well as through a Facebook Page
