The flu, the weather and moves to try to get a handle on the number of Prince Rupert's unsightly properties made for some of the news themes in the city this week.
The seasonal flu has made its presence known on the North Coast, as an outbreak at the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital gave Northern Health cause to limit visitors and reschedule elective appointments.
City Councillors heard an update from City Manager Robert Long on some solutions to the ongoing concerns over unsightly properties, as the city staff member responded to some inquiries from Councillor Barry Cunningham.
With the Coastal GasLink pipeline still making for some controversy in the Bulkley Valley, Premier John Horgan has called on a familiar name in the Valley, asking Nathan Cullen to act as a liaison for the province with Wet'suwet'en Chiefs in the region.
The winds roared around the North Coast this week, as a Thursday morning windstorm delayed ferry sailings, toppled a few trees put the landfill site and a range of waterfront industries in a holding pattern for much of the day.
And it was Hockey Night in Prince Rupert on Friday with a showdown between two of the fiercest rivals in the league battling it out at the Jim, with the Terrace River Kings taking on the Rampage in a game that would determine first place at the end of the CIHL regular season.
However, the most read story of the week was all about the flu and the impact it has had on health care at the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital
Influenza outbreak reported as declared at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital -- An outbreak of the seasonal flu arrived at the Prince Rupert Hospital, with hospital officials taking a number of precautions out of an abundance of caution. Among the measures, postponement of a number of elective appointments and procedures, as well as a request that all visits to the hospital be avoided. The emergency department however remained open for those in need of assistance. Later that same day, Northern Health provided for a wider overview of their measures in Prince Rupert as well as reassurances that the local situation had nothing to do with with the coronavirus issues coming from China. Thursday Windstorm leaves its mark on Prince Rupert -- While Environment Canada has offered up a number of weather warnings this winter that never quite panned out, their Warning of Wednesday of some approaching weather proved spot, on as strong windstorm found its way through the city this week. CIHL Showdown at the Jim set for tonight with First Place a potential prize -- Friday night brought what would be a pivotal game in the CIHL regular season to the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre, as the hometown Rampage faced off against the visiting River Kings. The night however would not go the way the boisterous fans in the Jim would want, with the visitors taking the two points and first place in the regular season with an 10-5 victory.
