Speaking towards the event for the Government today, was Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training, who observed as to the accomplishments of the province's college programs.
“The vital role of public colleges is felt across British Columbia. Colleges are creating economic opportunities and employment in every corner of the province and are leading the way by delivering dynamic and diverse academic, trades and vocational programs close to home. Through applied research and technical innovation, they are building the foundations of a thriving and successful B.C.”
In an information release from the government today, it's noted how 77% of the 860,000 jobs expected over the next decade will require a post-secondary education.
As well the province observed as to how Indigenous students are making for a growing component of the college stream. With 10 percent of the college population listed as Indigenous and accounted for in the annual enrolment numbers; with the most recent statistics showing that among the population, the ten colleges in the BC Association have 10,720 students who are self-identified as Indigenous.
Today's observance also provides for a chance to reflect on the impact of the College program across British Columbia, where for more than 50 years the post-secondary institutions in communities large and small have become an integral part of the cities and towns that they serve.
A glimpse as to how having local education options available in those communities can be found in a handbook that has been compiled for this years Colleges Day.
Among the stories chronicling the success of studies and ability to overcome challenges comes from Coast Mountain College's Terrace campus, which has the story of Danielle Middleton featured in a Success Stories compilation as part of today's events.

For the Prince Rupert campus, Colleges Day offers a chance to look back a year that has seen the local Coast Mountain College campus population expand though a number of programs that have been offered, in the trades and academics.
Among the biggest of changes for the year has been the expansion of the International school program at the Prince Rupert campus, which continues to see a growing number of students arriving in the city to pursue their studies.
