Recreation facilities getting prepped for use in many Northwest communities ... no word from Prince Rupert yet

There's not much happening these days around the
Prince Rupert Civic Centre complex as the facility remains
closed to the public owing to COVID

After close to a six month hibernation, some communities in the Northwest are preparing to reopen their recreation centres, skating rinks and Aquatic Centres, with the path ahead being relayed to residents over the course of the last week or so.

Terrace Civic officials rolled out some of their plans at their most recent council session, with a cautious reopening to start for some facilities in August with a larger expansion from September for the Aquatic Centre and into November for the larger ices surface of the Sportsplex, the plans will feature a range of COVID related guidelines.

Kitimat has commenced with the booking of ice time for the Tamitik Arena complex, as well as to relay some information for local associations designed to help with cost of operations for the Kitimat Marlins Swim Club, Snow Valley Skating Club and Kitimat Minor hockey.

Smithers as well is moving forward with their plans for recreation services into the fall, with Smithers Recreation recently launching the opportunity to book ice time at their new arena facility.

So far, Prince Rupert City Council has offered little in the way of guidance for the public as to when there may be a return to some of the recreation options offered at the Civic Centre complex.

Earlier this month the City did reopen the Gym facility in the Earl Mah Aquatic Centre, though with a range of COVID related policies in place.

The City has been running some limited attendance Summer camp programs through July and August making use of some of the facility options.

While they haven't discussed the city's recreation services much over the summer, Council members will have the opportunity to relay some news, or ask some questions at their only public session of Council for August set for next Monday evening.

  1. Considering full wages are being paid out to Recreation employees, it would be nice to know what the plan is especially since I am not really interested in using my tax dollars for them to make masks.
