Blog Watching: Week ending August 23, 2020

The weather and the impact of it was the story this week on the North Coast, that after a weekend of heavy and constant rain left a trail of flooded walkways, debris littered roads and the need for some Prince Rupert residents to once again boil their water.

The stalled weather system arrived on August 14th and remained in place for 48 hours delivering over 150 mm of precipitation, with flooding providing challenges on Highway 16 and raising turbidity levels for the City of Prince Rupert's water supply.

Other themes on the week included some community interest in temporary use plans proposed by the Prince Rupert Port Authority for land along Park Avenue on the city's west side.

The prospect of a reopening for recreation facilities across the Northwest took a leap forward this week, with a string of recent announcements from communities along the Highway 16 corridor, with Prince Rupert announcing the opening of the Earl Mah Aquatic Centre for mid September.

This was a also week which saw the Nisga'a Nation begin a period of mourning, with the word of the passing Nisga'a Leader Dr. Joseph Gosnell, with it came a range of tributes towards his life of leadership and politics in the Nass Valley, province and Canada.

However, when it came to the most read item of the last week, it was the return of Water Advisories for the region and the need for some in Prince Rupert to Boil their water once again.

It's back to the High Boil for some Prince Rupert Residents as City issues Water Advisory -- A weekend of wild weather brought back memories of two years ago, with the City of Prince Rupert's water supply developing high turbidity levels, a situation that delivered a Water Advisory and Boil Order notice for those at the most risk in the community. Port Edward also has its own Water Advisory in place, though that one has been related to recent maintenance work on their water system.   (posted  August 17, 2020)
