Vehicle incident near Smithers closes highway 16 for second time in two days

Travel east and west of Smithers is at a standstill at the moment as Drive BC advises of a vehicle incident that required the closure of the highway South of Old Babine Lake Road, 1 kilometre east of Smithers.

Few details have been released related to the nature of the incident, with an assessment now underway.

The delay for travellers however could be an extensive one, with the first estimated time for reopening of the main travel corridor in the Northwest not expected until 10 PM.

The next update on the situation from Drive BC is expected at 6PM



Yesterday the highway was closed for a portion of the day east of Terrace after an incident which claimed the life of a commercial truck driver.

Update: Early Thursday evening, the Smithers RCMP outlined some background to the incident, noting of their response to a two vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and pick up truck on the highway near Babine Lake Road.  Advising sadly, that one person was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Smithers Detachment is asking that anyone who may have witness the crash to contact their office at 250-847-3233.
