Uncivil passage ... BC Ferries Workers are calling for action on abuse from customers

The Northern Adventure preparing to head out from Prince Rupert

The members of the BC Ferries Marine Workers Union are taking their case for more civility from passengers to management and the public, calling attention to some of the uncivil behaviour, often bordering on abuse that those who staff the ferries often face.

With weather delays and equipment issues at times delaying sailings, or volumes of those looking to travel overwhelms the available sailings on occasion, tempers at times run short when passengers are advised that they won't be boarding until the next sailing or best available opportunity.

The focus for the information campaign appears to be directed towards the heavily travelled southern routes, but as every traveller on the North Coast and Haida Gwaii knows, delays and cancellations of service are often found on the northern routes as well, more likely during the winter and Spring when only one major vessel is in service on the run.

Still, the issue of sailing delays or equipment issues is not the responsibility of those who work on the vessels or answer the phones for reservations, and taking out frustrations on them seems like a misguided approach to solving some of those issues.

BC Ferries Employees are taking a call for more civility to the public
as incidents of verbal and at times physical abuse gain more notice

The awareness program hosted by the union was launched in recent days and cites statistics that indicate that 82% of those who work with BC Ferries have suffered abuse at the hands of passengers.

The majority of it is verbal abuse and includes threats, harassment or in some cases physical violence.

Over half of the unions members say that the abuse is such that it affects their mental health.

BC Ferries does have strict policies when it comes to abuse of their employees, however the union notes that the Ferry Corporation does not always enforce that standard and in some cases has rewarded abusive passengers in the past.

BC Ferries has posted signs noting their policy of no tolerance towards workers at Terminal locations and make announcements at the terminal and on board vessels to remind passengers of that policy.

The union's information campaign includes a link for BC Ferries workers to report abuse.

More on the union's campaign can be found here

Port of Prince Rupert helps put the Play into Port Edward Playground

Grand Opening for refurbished Park in Port Edward
(photo from Port of Prince Rupert)

The Port of Prince Rupert's compass pointed towards Port Edward late last week, as the District shared in some funding assistance from the Port Authority's Community investment fund.

Just in time for Canada Day, officials celebrated refurbishment of the Anne Neufeld Tot Park in Port Edward on Friday, with the new look in place at the popular gathering spot just as the start of summer vacation time gets underway.

The 150,000 dollar project brought some renewal to the 8,000 square foot play area, with modern play equipment now in place and a re-surfaced play area underneath.

The Port of Prince Rupert contributed 75,000 dollars towards the cost of the new look, others that partnered with the Port on the project were the District of Port Edward, NSK Contracting and the Prince Rupert Regional Community Foundation.

“The Prince Rupert Port Authority is pleased to contribute $75,000 to improve the Anne Neufeld Tot Park in Port Edward. We believe that a community’s future is only as healthy as the start that its youngest members get in life. This improvement to outdoor recreational equipment will serve as a legacy to enhance the quality of life for residents, namely children and their families, and is a great fit for our Community Investment Fund.” -- Shaun Stevenson, Prince Rupert Port Authority President and CEO.

Port Edward Mayor Knut Bjorndal  also spoke of the new look for the poplar play area in the District.

“The community of Port Edward is very excited to see the revival of this important recreational space geared towards our youngest of residents. It is our hope that the new playground amenities will not only serve to instill an active lifestyle and support skills development at a young age, but will also help to provide a meeting place for parents of those young children to build a sense of community and support among each other at a critical time in their parenting journey.”

The Port's investment in the project, makes for the 68th contribution towards the Community Investment Fund since the funding program was created in 2010.

You can learn more about the Port's Community Investment fund here.

Further notes on past investments are available here, while a wider overview of developments from the Port can be explored here.

Unleash the Kraken ... Argosy Mural unveiled prior to Canada Day weekend

The First of the Paint the Town projects is now complete, adding some
new visuals to the downtown core

A story of ancient Haida lore is on display in the downtown core, as a Kraken a legendary sea monster rises above the street line on Third West, enveloping the Good Ship Argosy as it sails along towards its fate.

That is part of the visual narrative that is now on full display on the eastern wall of the Downtown shop at Ninth Avenue West, turning the side of the building in the latest entry in Prince Rupert's ever evolving urban art experience.

The first of the summer of murals program under the Paint the Town initiative from Transition Prince Rupert took shape over the course of the week of June 21 to 28.

The project the final part of a week long art program from the previous four days that saw Derek Edenshaw and artists from Nomadic Alternatives come to town to host workshops in the community, with the Argosy mural the final touch to the week long celebration of urban art, the piece revealed to the public days before Canada Day.

Providing some scale to the mural on the eastern wall of
the Argosy location,  more urban art is on the way this summer
as Transition Prince Rupert reveals two more projects ahead

As we noted on June 21st, two more murals have been announced by Transition Prince Rupert, with the side of the Nisga'a Hall and Lax Kw'alaams Business Development Offices the next up on the list of locations that will get their artistic makeover.

Learn more about the Paint the Town program from the Transition Prince Rupert website and Facebook page.

Third Avenue West Fire investigation closed

The rubble of two homes in the foreground, the third structure
along Third Avenue West that suffered fire damage still stands, for now

After over a week of study of the scene, the Prince Rupert Fire/Rescue Department has not been able to come up with a determination related to the large downtown fire of  June 12th.

The early evening fire required additional crews to bring under control, with crowds lining the immediate area watching as the fire department went to its work of battling the blaze.

The official stamp on the file will be that of undetermined, with Prince Rupert Fire noting that a parallel investigation by the insurance company came up with the same finding.

The blaze which cloaked portions of the western end of the downtown in heavy smoke saw two structures reduced to rubble, while a third remains standing for the moment, its fate still to be determined.

As part of their work on the night of the 12th, Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the Pacific Inn to the east and Argosy to the west, though the Pacific Inn and nearby Fishermen's Hall did suffer some smoke or water damage.

Unless the RCMP receive information related to the case file, the investigation will now be closed.

Prince Rupert gets its party on in Celebration of Canada's 152nd

Crowds came and went from Mariner's Park all afternoon as
Prince Rupert celebrated Canada Day 2019

A large crowd of celebrants made their way to Mariner's Park on Monday, ebbing and flowing through the afternoon in celebration of  Prince Rupert's 152nd Birthday party for Canada Day.

With games for the youngsters and the bouncy castle on site there was lots for the youngest of party goers to enjoy, while the Centre Stage with music and dancing the main attraction, found a good and welcoming audience as well through the afternoon.

Tents also offered up Canada Day Quizzes, Balloons and other items to celebrate everything that is Red And White, while some at the Park just put down a blanket or chair and took in the noise and atmosphere of the day's events.

As always though it's the food that seems to be the main attraction for Canada Day, with the stretch of food tents all finding lengthy lines of patient party goers ready to sample the global cross section of food that is offered up at our annual birthday party.

The Day will come to an end with an 11 o'clock fireworks display over Prince Rupert Harbour, weather permitting and things look good to this point, the show will start at 11 PM, with the best vantage point Mariner's Park.

Canada Day is one of four major festivals that Prince Rupert's Special Events Society pulls together each year, you can learn more about their work and how you can volunteer to help out from their website and Facebook page.
