Marine Rescue Call Saturday brings everyone home safe off North end of Graham Island

A number of emergency responder resources was called to action
in an area north of Naden Harbour on Haida Gwaii on Saturday

A Saturday morning rescue call brought a number of emergency responders to a location west of Naden harbour on Graham Island, Haida Gwaii as a 70 foot wooden hull fishing vessel, later identified as the Pacific Pearl began to take on water.

The call which came in to the Masset Marine Rescue Station SAR45 at 9:30 AM on Saturday brought a crew from the SAR rescue boat Tagwaal to the scene, providing a pump and then a tow line to keep the vessel off the rocks.

They held vessel from drifting towards the rocks until the arrival of the CGS vessel McIntyre Bay which had been dispatched from the Prince Rupert base at Seal Cove, along with an RCMP vessel out of Masset.

Once on the scene the crew of the fishing boat were evacuated to the Coast Guard vessel, however their vessel having taken on too much water sank in the inlet.

Masset marine Rescue recounts their call to service through their Facebook page, included in their review of the incident are a number of photos from the scene, as well as words of thanks for all who assisted from the families of the crew of the Pacific Pearl.

Last September we made note of latest vessel for SAR work in the region with The Tagwaal, a Titan Falkins Class Type 2 vessel only recently having gone into service on Haida Gwaii.

The Masset based Society raised money towards the purchase, with financial assistance also coming from the Prince Rupert Port Authority's Community Investment Fund, as well asa BC Community Gaming Grant.
