Weekly paper feels the heat from its Sunday Waterfront fire coverage

There was a lot of heat generated by Sunday afternoon/evening's giant blaze on the Prince Rupert Waterfront, but the heat that was felt by the crowd above the CN Roundhouse, was nowhere near as hot as that which made its way to Fraser Street four blocks to the south.

It took the Prince Rupert Northern View three attempts to find the right narrative to Sunday's waterfront fire.

That after the local weekly felt the heat of some outraged readers after their first two drafts featured some speculation on the cause of the fire, observations that certainly captured the eye of readers.

The main thrust of the paper's coverage which started shortly after 7PM,  focused on the actual fire, but it was their one line of speculation that the fire may have been related to the recent protests in the Wet'suwet'en area of Northern BC that has come to dominate the theme of their coverage.

That observation brought out a strong complement of community members and before the paper closed their website comments off and scrubbed their Facebook posts the comments had made it well over the 50 contributions mark.

The view of the readership one that was pretty universal that the Prince Rupert paper had dropped the ball when it came to factual journalism on the waterfront fire story.

The tone of their work did seem somewhat surprising, with the paper working through a second draft of the story that noted, or maybe in their mind clarified things, suggesting that they were seemingly accounting for speculation heard among the crowd.

By the time the third draft came out sometimes towards 11 PM, the story simply stated that the cause was unknown.

That narrative changed by morning with the RCMP making an arrest in what is now being called an arson, the Mounties noting however that the incident is not believed to be related to recent protests at CN sites across the country.

However, the genie so to speak was already out of the bottle by the time the weekly got to their final draft, with respondents to the revised Facebook post still making note of the original themes and original but now banished post, calling the paper out on it.

Even more worrisome however, is how the original story, replicated on Black Press websites across the province,  has now generated a flood of social media observations and attention on Prince Rupert.

A collection of unhinged thoughts from contributors, who after reading the story from their local paper have made #PrinceRupert trend in with their own conspiracy theories.

From those early notes to the final draft, rather than covering news, the paper became the news; with their work to change the story, now fuelling a firestorm of its own and becoming the dominant takeaway from the story.

Arson the cause, suspect arrested in Sunday CN Roundhouse fire

Update: Statement from Prince Rupert RCMP on waterfront fire case file

Prince Rupert RCMP have made an arrest in relation to a large Sunday afternoon fire on the Prince Rupert Waterfront which consumed the old CN Rail Roundhouse building, a structure most recently used mainly for storage.

The Fire which attracted a large crowd along a lengthy stretch of First Avenue West began in the late afternoon and kept Prince Rupert Fire/Rescue personnel on the site late into the night.

However their work for the most part quickly became a containment operation,  as winds whipped the flames along the structure fairly quickly, in the end leaving nothing left but rubble to be cleared.

Fire destroyed another historical landmark in Prince Rupert, with
the old CN Roundhouse building now reduced to rubble

While the RCMP has not posted their statement to their website as of yet, CBC Radio/TV posted a story to their website this morning which notes of the arrest of one person in relation to the blaze, with a young male remaining in custody following the Sunday incident.

In the CBC Story, Corporal Devon Gerrits of the Prince Rupert RCMP provided the key element towards the investigation at this point.

Cpl. Devon Gerrits said the incident isn't believed to be related to recent protests at CN Rail sites across the country, some of which have involved small fires.

"No real motivation as of yet," Cpl. Gerrits said Monday morning.

The waterfront fire has generated significant discussion on social media, featuring contributions from both local residents and those from other parts of British Columbia and Canada.

Prince Rupert Fire/Rescue work large blaze on Prince Rupert Waterfront into Sunday evening

A fire on the Prince Rupert waterfront brought Prince Rupert Fire/Rescue to a number of vantage points of attack at the former CN Maintenance and Storage building near the fringe of Rotary Waterfront Park.

The blaze which broke out in the late afternoon of Sunday had already consumed a significant portion of the building as firefighters began their work of containment around the waterfront location.

On the water, a patrol vessel from the Prince Rupert Port Authority transited the area to keep any curious boaters from encroaching on the scene.

With RCMP members blocking access to the waterfront, a growing number of Prince Rupert residents found vantage points above, with their numbers stretching from Rupert Square in the east to the Oceanview Hotel to the west.

As the crowds assembled, the city's firefighters set up a second attack location from directly above the CN structure, with crews arriving across from the Highliner Inn.

Working the fire however proved to be a challenge as the speed of the fire was aided by a strong wind which served to spread the fire through the structure quickly.

The fire was still burning strong at 6PM with crews expected to be there much of the evening to try and knock it down and then to eliminate any hot spots that may remain.

We will have more background on the fire as information becomes available.

Prince Rupert Fire/Rescue has been updating their Facebook page with photos, while advising residents to avoid the area.

More notes of the fire are availble from social media  from a range of Facebook sources, as well as from twitter at #PrinceRupert

Wet'suwet'en Hereditary Chiefs, Provincial, Federal Ministers reach agreement over Rights and Title issues

Three days of talks in the Bulkley Valley have come to an end with a proposed draft agreement in place towards rights and title in the Wet'suwet'en territory of Northwest BC.

Though it is still unclear as to the terms of the agreement that was reached between the Wet'suwet'en Hereditary Chiefs and Federal Minister Carolyn Bennet, along with British Columbia Minister Scott Fraser.

Former Skeena-Bulkley ValleyMP Nathan Cullen who has been serving as a liaison through the discussions shared his thoughts on the process through his social media forums on Sunday

The document will be revealed to Wet'suwet'en members first before any signing ceremony is held, the timeline for release of any information by the two levels of government remains unknown at this point.

So far, there has been no information related to the three days of talks relayed through the Office of the Wet'suwet'en website.

As well, no further background on the results of the weekend talks have been provided to either the BC Government Newsfeed, or that of the Federal Government.

It is also unclear yet as to whether this agreement brings any progress towards resolution of the dispute over the placement of a pipeline route through the Wet'suwet'en territory in question.

As for the pipeline, with the three days of talks having come to a conclusion, Coastal GasLink announced today that its four day pause on construction of the pipeline will come to an end with work set to begin again on Monday morning.

Some of the notes on the day so far, can be reviewed below. We will add to the listings as more articles and observations become available.

Blog Watching: Week ending March 1, 2020

With some forward momentum ahead it seems for a new Middle School for Prince Rupert, the latest update on the long sought after facility certainly sparked some interest both in Prince Rupert and at the Legislature, with MLA Jennifer Rice making note of the plans as part of her Budget speech of the week.

Back at nome SD52 Secretary/Treasurer Cam McIntyre provided a glimpse for residents of the fours potential sites.

The ongoing dispute over the Coastal GasLink pipeline project brought traffic to a stop on Highway 16 this week as a blockade closed the east - west route between Smithers and Prince Rupert for much of Monday night and into the early hours of Tuesday morning.

After a fairly impressive regular season, the Prince Rupert Rampage ran into a determined River King team from Terrace with the league camps from the Skeena Valley knocking the Rhinos out of the playoffs in a two game sweep.

As the newly renamed COVID 19 coronavirus now is counted in a number of countries around the globe after its launch in China in December, British Columbia officials outlined the current numbers and state of preparation in place in this province.

And to wrap up our list of five we look at how Skeena MP Taylor Bachrach viewed an announcement  from BC based Teck Resources this week, with the mining giant cancelling plans to develop an oil Sands mine in Alberta

However, the most read story of the week brings some much desired energy towards the long desired quest for a new Middle School for Prince Rupert.

School District showcases potential new sites for new middle school -- SD52 provided a short preview of their Thursday Open house for Prince Rupert City Council on Monday evening, with SD52 Secretary/Treasurer Cam McIntyre outlining the options for development of a new Middle School.  Later in the week following Thursday's Open House, the School District offered residents a chance to offer their opinions on the potential sites.   (posted  February 26 , 2020)

Highway 16 Closed at New Hazelton as protesters shift their blockade to only east-west highway route -- With members of the RCMP making arrests on a new blockade of the CN Rail tracks last week, those in support of the Wet'suwet'en shifted their protest to Highway blocking the regions only throughway until the hereditary chiefs that had been arrested at the rail line were released from jail (posted February 24,  2020  )

COVID 19 Update for BC notes steps of preparation in the province -- As the global spread for the COVID 19 virus first reported in China in December continued its march, the province of BC outlined some of the recent notes in this province towards preparation and ongoing treatment of patients     (posted February 28, 2020 )

MP Bacharch hails 'turning point' of Teck decision to cancel Alberta project  -- The cancellation of another major oil sands development project in Alberta gave Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach an opportunity to mark the moment as one of change towards climate action goals. Though the current of the conversation elsewhere was more of a focus on an inability to move forward on resource development.  .(posted  February  25, 2020)
