Taylor Bachrach's travelogue ... notes from the Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP's visit to the North Coast

The 2020 marketing slogan from Tourism Prince Rupert this year is See for Yourself, with the local tourism organization inviting visitors from across the Northwest to the North Coast for a look at what we have to offer.

And in the days ahead of the BC Day weekend, Skeena-Bulkley MP Taylor Bachrach did just that.

With the Northwest MP making the trip west from his Smithers home to spend a week working out of his Ocean Centre constituency office to get a sense of what's happening around the region.

Through the course of last week, Mr. Bachrach had a full list of things to do and places to see.

Among the stops that the MP checked out was the work at Coastal Shellfish at Seal Cove,  Mr. Bachrach also heard from civic officials on how they view the success of their work when it comes to Watson Island,.

As well, while out Port Edward way, he also stopped in at the North Pacific Cannery Historical Site to hear of their plans for reopening in 2021.

According to the final account of his journey to the North Coast relayed through his Facebook page, the MP hosted 25 meetings with local residents and officials over the course of his five day visit.

More notes on his work at the House of Commons can be explored through our archive page here.

SD52 website hosts archive for provincial updates on Back to School 2020

While they haven't announced the details of the local Back to School program as of yet, School District 52 is providing for some one stop access to the notes from the Province of British Columbia, with the SD52 website hosting an archive of sorts for the latest updates and announcements from the Ministry of Education.

The introduction of the archive (which you can review here) comes following the Ministry of Education roll out of its Back to School plans last week, which we reviewed here .

The SD52 archive page features the full statements on the September plans from the Ministry, as well as some of their past notes on Graduation themes, school funding, Aboriginal studies and more.

As for what the local School plan may look like, recently departed interim School Superintendent Sandra Jones observed last week that the Prince Rupert School District program would be introduced sometime in August.

That introduction for the 2020-21 schools program will come from Andrew Samoil, he was named to the post of Superintendent back in late June, his first day in the top spot with the School District arrived on August 1st.

For more notes on Education across the Northwest see our archive page here.

Demolition Day looms for abandoned vehicles collected by City of Prince Rupert

A number of abandoned vehicles are in storage awaiting
demolition if registered owners don't claim them by August 7th

(photo from City of PR Annual Report)

The City of Prince Rupert is making plans to take once again care of a number of abandoned vehicles that it has collected in recent months, with the City outlining the fate of the vehicles it has in storage through a recent public notice.

The notice of pending demolition was provided to the back pages of the weekly paper last week, noting that eighteen vehicles will be demolished unless their owners contact the City of Prince Rupert by August 7th.

Registered owners must be able to prove ownership and pay all outstanding charges, including storage by that date.

For whatever reason, the notice for the public has not been posted to the city's website, or to the range of social media portals and apps that they now have in place.

You can however view the full description and VIN numbers from the vehicles from the back pages of last week's newspaper.

Or you can contact the Landfill site for more information on the City's disposal plans for the vehicles contact that civic facility at 250-624-5482.

The clean up of abandoned and derelict vehicles makes one of a number of concerns from some of the city's councillors when it comes towards a need to clean up the city, the vehicle program one which seems to be having more success than the quest to improve the look of buildings in the downtown area.
