Blog Watching: Week ending August 1, 2020

COVID-19 once again dominated the local news headlines, that as there was an increase in the amount of cases that have stemmed from the community outbreak on Haida Gwaii.

Among the the themes that came from the Haida Gwaii notes, precautionary moves made by the Lax Kw'alaams Band Council just in case the coronavirus is reported in the Prince Rupert area.

As well  the Province put in place a travel ban to the Islands for non residents and tasked BC Conservation Service Officers to enforce it.

The outbreak also made for the theme for a pair of statements through the Legislature from North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice.

As part of their review of Provincial COVID measures, the BC Government returned some local authority to municipal governments, though any measures related to the COVID-19 virus will still require Provincial government approval.

The week also provided a look at some positive news for the hard hit local fishing industry, with one fish plant making a rare call for new employees to handle a recent surge in fish landings through their facility.

However, when it came to the most read item of the last week, the concerns over the outbreak of COVID on Haida Gwaii and preparations across Hecate Strait by the Lax Kw'alaams Band Council.


New Advisory for Lax Kw'alaams residents notes measures now in place after word of  COVID in Haida Gwaii -- The declaration of a community outbreak on Haida Gwaii has given the Lax Kw'alaams Band Council cause to put in motion its own plans of preparation should the virus be reported in the Prince Rupert area    (posted  July 28 , 2020)

Haida Gwaii case count level reaches twenty reported cases  -- Additional cases earlier this week increased the number cases tied into the community outbreak on Haida Gwaii, by Thursday the BC Government had announced restrictions on travel to Haida Gwaii banning travel by non-residents and for non-essential purposes. Friday it was announced that members of he BC Conservation Service would be enforcing that travel ban from the Prince Rupert Ferry Terminal. (posted July 29 , 2020)

BC Government returns some Local Emergency Authority to municipalities ... but with conditions -- The provincial government moved to return some local authority to municipal governments,  adjusting their order of March which rescinded all Local orders. The return of the ability to local government involves areas other than those related to COVID-19, the response to which remains under provincial control    (posted July 302020 )

Strong landings at Canadian Fish made for call for new employees last week --  A spike in fish landings to a Prince Rupert fish plant made for an unusual change in the local employment situation, with the need to hire new employees at Canadian Fish to work the volume of fish in the plant.  (posted July 28 , 2020)
