Prince Rupert City Council may be on a bit of a hiatus from their work during their more relaxes summer schedule, but a few themes from City Hall dominated when it came to stories of interest for our readers.
Of the five most read items of the week three were related to Civic or Regional Government.
The most read of the five coming out of our look at some social media commentary on civic management from Mayor Herb Pond's Facebook portal.
Our review of the City's plans for a property disposition and reduction of the Cow Bay Parking lot and some of the feedback they have reviewed from the business community there, also found a large audience this week.
Our look at the use of the Alternate Approval Process by North Coast Regional District towards a pair of funding plans also gained some significant review this week.
The transcripts from a court case in Prince Rupert that began during the times of COVID and channelled much in the way of the Freemen themes that came out of that period towards its conclusion in April, provided for an interesting look at the frustrations for the Courts when addressing cases where their authority has been challenged.
And Prince Rupert's Port workers, like their brothers and sisters on the picket lines along the BC Coast went back to work on Friday, that as both sides of the labour dispute accepted the Federal Mediators final Recommended Settlement.
The top story of the week, however explores the expectations for residents and perhaps some questions as to how City Council may view that when it comes to staffing top civic positions.
Should a City Manager live in the City he manages? ... A topic perhaps for public discussions for Prince Rupert Council members -- A comment to a question on Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond's social media feed, provided for a large volume of readership and some lively replies to our notes on civic management this week. Cow Bay Business owners push back on City's plans for parking area -- Expressing surprise at a move by the City of Prince Rupert to carve off some of the parking area on Cow Bay road as part of a property disposition, some of the merchants from the area have called for a pause on the plans. Court transcripts chart the path of deliberations from Rupert's 'Freemen' trial -- A court trial that was described as a long and tortured file came to an end earlier this spring, that with a one year sentence for Prince Rupert Cameron Hardy. The background to the court case released recently through the court transcripts, making for some fascinating reading into what happens when the Justice System runs into someone who won't accept its legitimacy. North Coast Regional District to use Alternative Approval Process towards two funding proposals -- While the City of Prince Rupert's plans for using AAP for insfrastructure loan approval has generated a bit of controversy. The use of the same Alternate Approval Process by North Coast Regional District for two funding programs has moved forward with little in the way of awareness or comment. (posted July 10, 2023)
BC Port Strike Mediators' Recommended Settlement" delivered to ILWU, BCMEA, response required by 10:30 AM Thursday -- Day 12 of the BC Port Strike brought the apparent last word from the Federal Government on the status of the on and off negotiations of the previous two weeks. That as the Federal Mediator delivered the 'recommended settlement' requested by Labour Minister Seamus O'Regan. Whatever was in the settlement appeared to be enough to bring an end to the disruption to shipping on the BC coast. You can review our full archive of the thirteen day strike here.
