Metlakatla First Nation member Josh Leighton celebrated in Premier's Sports Awards


A North Coast athlete is among a large group of Indigenous athletes to be celebrated this week through the Premier's Sports Award Program, with Metlakatla First Nation member and Prince Rupert resident Josh Leighton making the grade for the honours.

Mr. Leighton was recognized for his talents and dedication in Hockey, Golf, Track and Field and Cross Country, he was one of 9 athletes from Northern BC named to the Premier's List,  the Northern nine joining another 24 across BC for the annual recognition.

The biography that comes with his award notes of his achievements with the local Seawolves Minor hockey program, his commitment to community, academic success and his passion for his Metlkatla roots.

The Awards program is a partnership between the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council and the province with the program launched in 2022, making for the regional nomination process for the six regions.
