With an expansion of port infrastructure and other major projects on the horizon, the level of quarry development in the area to service those construction needs is growing.

An example of the expanding need for aggregate can be found from any trip along Highway 16 over the last few years, where a number of aggregate operations have opened up.

The Lax Kw'alaams Business Development organization is looking to add to the list having made an application to the Provincial lands office seeking approval for a quarry development on the south side of Mount Hays.

A prospectus for the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources provides the background for their quarry project noting how it will provide employment for the local community as well as to create aggregate that is required for building and construction in the region.

The proposed site for the new quarry venture one that is  located adjacent to the existing quarry currently in operation on the east side of the Ridley Island Access Road.
