City Staff to recommend Kitimat based Paving company for major road remediation in 2020

Paving season is almost here and tonight the City of Prince Rupert
Council members could approve a contract for significant work this summer

While Prince Rupert Councillor Barry Cunningham may have called out to Council to stay local last month, when it comes to one of the big ticket public works projects for 2020, City staff will be recommending the services of a Kitimat paving company when it comes to repair the city's challenging roads this summer.

In a Report for City Council to be reviewed tonight, Director of Operations Richard Pucci will provide the background to a contract Award for the City's Capital Paving Program.

As we noted on the blog last month the project had been put out for tender in May, with two bids received by the City of Prince Rupert.

One from Prince Rupert based Adventure Paving, the other from C and C Road Maintenance which has a head office in Armstrong and operations in  Kitimat BC.

While Councillor Cunningham and a few others may wish to try and stay local as much as possible, the report for Council tonight will indicate some significant cost savings to be found out of town.

"While Adventure Paving is a local business that we have worked with numerous times, we can’t ignore the 25.3% ($203,579.88) cost-saving." -- City of Prince Rupert Director of Operations, Richard Pucci on this years paving program contract award

Once the number crunching was done, it was the Kitimat bid of $804,251.50 which was considered by the City to be the best option, providing for a 23 percent saving, estimated at 203,579 dollars for the work this summer.

The Capital budget for Paving was approved  in December of 2019.

Last month, the City identified some of the areas for attention this summer as they look to rebuild some of the many areas of the city requiring some road improvement.

Council members will offer up their thoughts and potential approval for the contract as part of tonight's Council session starting at 7PM.

  1. Well that is good news the city can do another $200,000.00 in paving and still be on budget.
