A plan from Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries to introduce a Fish Trap just off the banks of the Skeena near Port Essington is working its way through the Transport Canada approval process.
The project which was submitted for review earlier this month would see construction of the Fish Trap start later this year with plans to introduce it into service in early 2021.
A Fish Trap is a form of fixed fishing gear and is used to passively capture fish. As Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries explains it:
"Fish traps lessen direct and indirect mortality on non-target fish species and are utilized as a form of sustainable harvest."
Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries plan to use the Fish Trap for ecological research and monitoring, while developing the fish trap technology for future sustainable fisheries aimed at selective harvest of salmon.

As part of the Transport Canada consultation process those with comments to make related to any impact on a navigable waterway can submit them to the Transport Canada website.
