Lax Kw'alaams, MLA Jennifer Rice celebrate new housing for Elders

The completion of affordable housing for Elders in Lax Kw'alaams was the focus yesterday for the Province of British Columbia, which celebrated the partnership between the province and the Band Council as eight units at 2101 Nelson Street become home for residents of the North Coast First Nation community.

The Single storey complex which features two  and one bedroom units for Elders  rent for 570 and 375 depending on the unit selected. Residents began moving into the complex on June 1st.

“The project allows our Elders an affordable option to remain in the community thereby staying close to their families, their community and their lifestyle. The partnership between the Province and Lax Kw’alaams is an example of how public monies can be used for the benefit of all British Columbians.” -- Gary Reece, mayor, Village of Lax Kw’alaams.

The planning for the units began in 2016 under the Liberal government, starting what became a three and a half year path towards addressing some of the housing concerns for Lax Kw'alaams.

Yesterday,  North Coast NDP MLA Jennifer Rice made note of the completion of the housing option for those living in the community.

As we noted earlier this month the Lax Kw'alaams Band celebrated the wrap up to the work in May and began taking applications for residency at that time.

Lax Kw'alaams also has proposed a large investment into Prince Rupert's housing situation, with plans for the development of sixty units of housing for property on 11th Avenue East. 

That project was one of the highlight notes from Mayor Lee Brain's 2030 vision plan event of December and he most recently made note of it.

So far however, few details have been released as to when the project will break ground and when the proposed addition to Prince Rupert's housing stock will open to the public.
