Concerns over Federal Liberal backtracking on Salmon Farms spurs letter writing plans

British Columbia organizations dedicated towards Wild Salmon are once again calling on the public to take to their computers or pens and to send a message to Ottawa on the pace of action towards Salmon Farms in the province.

A post to the Friends of Wild Salmon social media feed notes that some recent moves by the Federal government seems to have gone against what was promised when it comes to protection for Wild Salmon.

From their notes to the issue, Friends of Wild Salmon observe of the two critical decisions ahead that they have concerns about when it comes to salmon faming,  noting on both as follows:

First, she has to decide the future of the Discovery Islands farms that were closed by former Minister Jordan in December, 2020. That decision is expected any day now.

Next, Minister Murray must decide what to do with the hundred-odd farms on the rest of the coast. Her government’s promise was clear: they would be transitioned from B.C. waters.

Now, they’re entertaining ideas like “semi-closed” systems (read: netpen in a tarp) or “hybrid” systems (read: conventional netpen with big smolts) as if that were a transition from B.C. waters.

Worse yet, they’re thinking of giving the farms longer licences and increased production to help pay for using ‘technology’ that doesn’t solve the basic problem: farm effluents kill wild salmon.

Towards their letter writing initiative, the organization has set up a template letter for supporters and those with an interest in their quest towards salmon farms to make use of.
