Fall Hiring Call for the Prince Rupert Fire Hall

With the Prince Rupert Fire/Rescue Service in an era of transition from veteran to new fire fighters, the City of Prince Rupert has posted the latest in what has been a stream of Firefighter postings since 2022.

The newest listing to the City Career Opportunities listings was announced on Friday afternoon, with a job posting for a Permanent/Full Time Firefighter.

The position pays the successful applicant a starting wage of $6,271 per month for the first six months, it is then indexed according to the Schedule A provisions in place.

A comprehensive   benefits package is offered, with members of the Prince Rupert Fire Rescue Department part of the IAFF Local 559.

The full overview of what's expected of the applicants and the requirements for consideration for employment can be reviewed here.

Deadline for applications is November 5th.

Retirements and departures for other opportunities have seen some significant turnover of the roster of the city's fire fighting service.

  1. How many fire fighters do we have? Seriously, what’s the head count?

  2. So will they hire females now? Or is this just a male position? Will an HR person be present during the hiring ? To make sure it’s inclusive ? The City of PR needs to become more diverse with their hiring practices.

    1. They should hire the best candidate period. If that’s a woman so be it but why should they hire a female just to check a box off a list

  3. When you compare FD in Van, PG, other communities there’s a lot more diversity and women. They only ticked the box once 😉

    1. You mean moustaches aren’t a requirement??

  4. I’m wondering the cost per call out for our fully paid fire department. It seems that most communities have a volunteer component that apparently works for them. Why are we supporting an extremely costly department? Is this a time to have a partially volunteer workforce working with a smaller full-time group?

    1. Is that you volunteering yourself? Good luck!

    Terrace Firefighter Job Posting -
At the City of Terrace, we are committed to creating a workplace that is welcoming and inclusive for all. We welcome and encourage applications from individuals who self-identify as belonging to underrepresented and historically marginalized groups, including but not limited to: Indigenous peoples, people of colour, women, LGBTQ25+ individuals, people with disabilities, and newcomers to Canada.

    Which one sounds more inclusive?

  6. Seriousness you want someone hired because they are a minority against skill/experience? This job requires saving lives. Get real

    1. I have not posted anything here, but reading what has been posted, I would say that you are the one that needs to, in your words, 'get real'. You have created a straw man. No one has argued that someone should be hired because they self-identify as belonging to a minority.

What is clear from what has been presented by the previous poster is that Terrace has a more inclusive and contemporary message to welcome diversity. PRFD's 'we're all individuals' line is from a different time that favoured some and marginalized others. It badly needs a makeover.

    2. So what you are saying is minorities don't possess skills!

  7. No that’s not what I am saying. I do believe minorities possess skills. Im not ignorant but I believe they should hire the best canidate not based on minority status

  8. Should the fire department lower their hiring standards for the sake of diversity? Do you think there is some big pool of diverse/qualified applicants to choose from? Doubtful. Of course diversity is ideal! BUT in a small community like Prince Rupert you can't really compare our fire department's diversity to that of Vancouver's.

If your kids were trapped in a burning building wouldn't you want the most qualified candidates to rescue them? Or do you want someone there who was handed the job just to check a box?

Here's hoping a qualified female with experience applies and EARNS that position. With lives on the line, whether it be she/he/they responding, wouldn't you want the best of the best saving our community members?
