The usually unpredictable North Coast weather of October chose to provide for a perfect backdrop to Saturday's Totem Pole Raising at Galloway Rapids, with crisp temperatures and a light mist in the background offering up a striking contrast to the raising of the pole the creation of Mike Dangeli.
It was put in place at Galloway Rapids as part of a commemoration of those who have survived Indian Residential Schools and in memory of the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls and 2 Spirit people.
The Prince Rupert pole serves as the western twin to one in Terrace near Kitsumkalum, others are planned for Highway 16 and beyond.
As we outlined last week, Prince Rupert City Councillor Reid Skelton-Morven had provided some additional background to the events of the weekend sharing his overview at the October 10th council session.
The event on Saturday was commemorated by a range of participants. From those involved in the organization of the totem pole raising, to a large number of residents and officials such as North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice who shared photos.
Skeena Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach provided a video (see here) of the event (image from the top of this item) that captured the moment the totem was put into place.
A full two hour plus video of the Saturday event is available on the Prince Rupert BC Community Facebook page.
