Streak of sunny weather brings roofing work to City leased Rushbrook Canfisco warehouse

It's been a good week to get a start on some roofing issues before the
rains of fall arrive in Prince Rupert

A week of Sunny weather has seen the start of work on the City of Prince Rupert leased Canfisco warehouse property, with supplies arriving earlier this month and the work launching this week atop the  roof of the giant warehouse on George Hills Way.

The facility which the city leases from the Canadian Fish Company has been leased out by the city to a number of organizations both commercial and recreational.

Among the tenants, the Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association, RONA and the Wheelhouse Brewing Company, with other groups currently exploring opportunities within the cavernous structure adjacent to the now closed Fish Plant.

City Council approved the roofing project as part of their Capital Project work which was outlined in March of this year.

In their notes at that time, city staff  observed of dialogue with the Jim Pattison Group which owns the structure towards a number of leaks reported by the tenants.

The City had proposed fixing half the roof and deducting the cost of the work from future rent payments from their tenants.

There has been no follow up discussion in a public council session on the Warehouse plans, or any update on those conversations with Canfisco officials since the Budget period.

Monday's most recent City Council session brought no mention of the start of the roofing work or the timeline towards its completion.

  1. Why do we have to fix a roof on a leased building. That should be up to the owner!

  2. Who is responsible depends on the terms of the lease.

  3. Negotiations between Jimmy and the City. I’m betting on Jimmy. Prince Rupert taxpayers lost.

  4. Update - https://www.princerupert.ca/index-pages/news/roof-repairs-near-complete-canfisco-warehouse - and I took the deduction of the cost from rent payments to mean those costs would be deducted from the City's payment to Pattison group, not the City tenants.
