In the end, Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen's bill came up twenty one votes short, as MP's voted on Wednesday afternoon on his proposed amendments to the Canadian Shipping Act.
The NDP MP had introduced his private member's bill last year, working it through first reading and leading up to the pivotal vote of yesterday, along the way Cullen had visited a number of communities across British Columbia to try and rally public support for his cause.
Yesterday, prior to the vote the MP made one more attempt to sway the members of the Conservative party to vote against their party lines and support his bill, a desk pounding presentation that highlighted his approach of recent days, as he attempted to rally MP's to his cause, as the vote was nearing.
However, Wednesday's appeal to MP's was a request that apparently didn't resonate very much with those from British Columbia, that weren't members of the NDP.
In the end, the Nays took the day 141 to 120, sending Mr. Cullen's bill down to defeat.

Cullen expressed his disappointment at the end result of his quest to move his bill forward, suggesting that it's not the last that Canadians have heard of his proposal.
Offering an indication that he plans to keep it as a live issue for the next six months and take the conversation into the next election campaign, expected sometime in the fall.
