Coast Tsimshian Enterprises looks to get into the landfill business

Coast Tsimshian Enterprises are proposing to
operate a clean soil disposal site near Miller Bay

While the City of Prince Rupert pursues the loans process for its landfill expansion plans at the Ridley Island landfill site, another potential Waste Dump/Fill site is being considered for land not too far away.

Tsimshian Enterprises, a co-venture between the Business Development Corporations of Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla currently have an application process underway with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural resources to develop a sustainable Waste Dump/Fill Site facility on a parcel of land adjacent to the Miller Bay area, it would be accessed off Highway 16.

The application to the Ministry which was submitted in December notes how the Prince Rupert and surrounding area is currently seeing significant development which is going to cause a lack of facilities and land in which to put waste materials.

The proposed initiative which is known as the Kaien Island Clean Soil Disposal project is noted as part of the long term vision for both Development corporations and that the development of the site would contribute to the sustainability of the Prince Rupert area.

Unlike the Prince Rupert landfill site however which is more of a mix of residential and commercial use; the proposed Coast Tsimshian Enterprises project would be more focused on industrial use, particularly Port development requirements.

In the documentation for the ministry, the main focus of the proposed site is to provide for a permanent storage of clean soil materials that will be obtained from the clearing of the container port expansion and other industrial developments in the Prince Rupert/Port Edward are.

The operations for the clean soil dumping are planed to be seasonal in nature from March to October, with its activities driven by the availability and placement of the clean soil.

The area was selected due to its proximity of proposed projects on or near Ridley Island.

The application for the land use is currently in the Comment period with the last day for any submissions coming up on March 25th.

Should the application be approved, the current development plan anticipates clearing and initial development of the site sometime in 2020.
