City Council Preview: Monday, August 20, 2018

Prince Rupert City Council hosts their only public session for the month of August on Monday, with much of the work looking to be that of variance reviews and other zoning requests.

Council will hear one presentation on the night, with representatives from Ridley Terminals scheduled to be in attendance to provide an update on their plans for a Berth Expansion at the coal handling facility on Ridley Island. Monday night's presentation is a rescheduling of a previous appearance that was originally set for July.

Variance Permit reports and requests make for much of the rest of the night, along with a review of a proposal to stratify a property on Seal Cove Circle.

The City's Financial Officer will also review the latest Financial variance report from June for Council members.

A request for a proclamation request for the Prince Rupert and District Metis Society will be reviewed by Council, as well, council will explore the final stage in adoption for the Vehicle for Hire Regulation amendment bylaw.

Monday is also a Committee of the Whole night, which offers the opportunity for residents of the city to ask questions or raise concerns with members of City Council.

An advisory from the City, notes that the August 20th Committee of the Whole will be the last one prior to the October election.

Additional Notice is hereby given that due to the Municipal Election occurring on October 20, 2018, the next COTW Meeting will be scheduled to occur on November 26, 2018.

A move which also means that there will be no further public comment opportunities at Council meetings until the November 26th session and the installation of a new council membership.

Council will also meet in a Closed session at 5PM prior to Monday's Regular Session, the need to go behind the closed doors was explained through the Community Charter as follows:

(a) personal information about an identifiable individual who holds or is being considered for a position as an officer, employee or agent of the municipality or another position appointed by the municipality;

and (k) negotiations and related discussions respecting the proposed provision of a municipal service that at their preliminary stages and that, in the view of the council, could reasonably be expected to harm the interests of the municipality if they were held in public.

You can review the Full Agenda Packages for both the Regular Council Session and that of the Committee of the Whole from the City's website here.
