Prince Rupert's annual festival of theatre and improv launched its 20th edition last night with two shows, Hook, Line and Snicker and Certainly a Heap of Erratically Silly Scenes making for the Opening night of Udder Fest 2018.
And as the city's theatre community took to the stage of the Tom Rooney Playhouse, they did so on a new stage, just the latest improvement for the community theatre on the city's westside of the downtown core.
The stage replacement project was launched by Harbour Theatre Society and as part of the funding for the project the Port of Prince Rupert contributed $8,500 towards the new showpiece fixture.
The total cost for the much needed replacement project was $18,000 dollars, with volunteers demolishing the original stage and installing the new one.
“The Rooney” is a 100-seat theatre in downtown Prince Rupert, whose aging stage had been donated by School District #52 about 20 years ago but had deteriorated to the point that it was negatively impacting the quality of performances. The total cost of the replacement was $18,000 and was complemented by a volunteer effort to dismantle and recycle the existing platform.
