Language, Culture and Science make for summer themes for Lax Kw'alaams




Residents of Lax Kw'alaams have a full August ahead of them, with a pair of learning opportunities among the range of activities taking place both in the community north of Prince Rupert and here in the city as well.

An opportunity to brush up on, or learn Sm’algyax is being offered at the Lax Kw'alaams Business Development Office on Tuesday's this month starting on August 7th, with Alex Campbell hosting the sessions from 7 to 9 PM.



The Community Sm’algyax classes which are Free ,will provide instruction in conversational Sm’algyax, vocabulary, grammar and Coast Tsimshian adaawx (oral history)

All are welcome and all ages encouraged to attend.

The Lax Kw'alaams Business Development Office is located at 100 1st Avenue East.

Lax Kw'alaams budding scientists are making ready for a summer robotics course which is coming to the community next week.

Hosted by Coast Mountain College and actua, the four day digicamp will help youngsters explore digital literacy through coding, robotics and a range of media forms.





The camps which take place from August 7 to 10,  are designed for youngsters from ages 5 to sixteen and are divided into three age groups, 5 to 7, 8 to 12 and 13 to 16.

Residents of Metlakatla will want to note that the camp is also heading their way this month, with a one week session planned for August 13 to 17.

August 9th makes for a major event for the community with the arrival of the Canoe Journey for 2018, with a community BBQ planned to welcome the participants as they arrive in Lax Kw'alaams.



The Lax Kw'alaams Dancers, Canoe Journey Dancer Group and guests from Metlakatla, Alaska will all be performing as part of the event to take place at the Recreation Centre.
