North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice enters the nail polish fray at SD52

A controversial incident at SD52 last week which saw a school teacher at Conrad Elementary Student remove a Grade 2 male student's nail polish from his fingers, has made its way to the British Columbia Legislature.

During the Monday afternoon session of the Chamber in Victoria, North Coast Jennifer Rice recounted the nature of the incident to the Members in the House, noting of a gesture of solidarity with the student by a number of MLA's as part of her presentation.

My introduction today is of Shemar, who's at home in Prince Rupert but will be watching.

Shemar, for his birthday, received his very first manicure pedicure. He turned eight, and this put a huge smile on his face.

Unfortunately, it wasn't received as well at school.

In solidarity, many of my colleagues here — over two dozen, including many of my male colleagues — we painted our nails.

And our message to Shemar is that anyone can paint their nails, and they deserve to feel safe going to school doing so.

All the best for Shemar.

Ms. Rice also shared a photo of her colleagues showing their nail work and sending their bet wishes to the Grade 2 Prince Rupert student

On her social media stream the MLA also has a special note for the young Prince Rupert student, advising him that there is a 100 dollar gift certificate waiting for him at her office in the Ocean Centre Mall

The incident became part of the public narrative last week, that after the family went to the local newspaper to share their concern over the treatment of their son at the school.

School District 52 has not provided for much in the way of an official information  release related to the situation,  other than a short advisory that  was issued on Friday and is sufficiently vague enough, that it could actually serve to cover a few recent incidents in local schools.

The School District has not updated their notes to this point to reflect how the incident specific to Conrad School may or may not have been resolved things for the parents and their son.

  1. It took SD52 almost 2 weeks to remove the teacher! She continued to teach her class while Shemar stayed at home.

  2. It is interesting that it took two weeks for the teacher to be removed. How long will the initial investigation take?

  3. It also took the Board of Trustees 10 days to issue a statement. Absolutely ridiculous, this was all over the news and it should have been addressed immediately
