City Councillor Reid Skelton-Morven comes up short in quest for Chief Councillor Post in Metlakatla

Reid Skelton-Morven will return his political focus to themes
of municipal government, that after his unsuccessful campaign
for the Chief Councillor Position in Metlaktla

As we outlined late Friday evening, residents of Metlakatla cast their ballots for a new Council membership and a new Chief Councillor, the latter coming with the retirement of Chief Harold Leighton from the post.

When the voting results were released a few hours after balloting ended,  Robert Nelson was announced as the choice of First Nation residents to take charge of their government for the next term, the former incumbent Councillor for Metlakatla coming out ahead of four other contenders for the top office.

Among them was Prince Rupert City Council member Reid Skelton-Morven who launched his quest for office back in June, running a strong social media driven campaign for office.

Meltakatla election officials have not as of yet released the tallies of the vote, so how much Mr. Morven's message resonated with the voters isn't known, though he was quick to pay tribute to the Metlakatla process and the verdict that the people of Metlakatla delivered.

As he did not step down from his duties in Prince Rupert during the campaign, the second term City Councillor can now pivot his attention back towards the issues of note at Prince Rupert City Hall.

Something that Mayor Herb Pond made note of in a social media message of congratulations on Mr. Morven's campaign.

That strong social media campaign resonated with 53 votes for Skelton-Morven.
Looks like the Art of Campaigning won't be getting a five star review.

    1. Wow that’s quite a rude way to tear down a young man trying his best to do some good in the community. At least he had the courage to put his name forward publicly, unlike some….

    2. Have a read of NCR article
“Councillor Skelton-Morven's social media campaign theme takes aim at challenger Andy Chugh”
And ask yourself if that was good for the community.

    3. Ah sour grapes we see. Absolutely it was good for Prince Rupert. Did you read Chugh’s concession statement weeks after the election? It was the most self serving, un-self-aware, and unapologetic rationalization. The people judged character and spoke accordingly

    4. For context, the 'people' only accounted for a 32% voter turnout in the 2022 election.

Only 2,888 of 8,970 potential voters bothered to participate..

So not sure that's an endorsement of anyone's character from the election last year ... or if it's more a case of just getting out a vote.

    5. Didnt Reid get twice as many votes as Andy? A near 3000 person local poll gives a pretty good indication ….

    6. Indeed, a very good indication that he was able to get out the vote ... in an election which didn't really resonate with the voters much to show up at the polls.

Now, how you extrapolate election data as an endorsement of anyone's character is up to you ... NCR

    7. For context, your “didn’t really resonate” statement is subjective commentary, not an objective fact. But the cold hard data shows Reid increased his vote share and count from the prior election and doubled Andy by 2:1.

    8. Well, you're mixing your narratives ... but whatever you wish, if vote totals are your template for character, so be it.

Shall be moving on to other news items now though.

    9. You want to talk about character? Andy was the only candidate who bothered to knock on my door, in the pouring rain I might add. Although we disagreed on several points he explained his reasoning and had a dignified half hour plus conversation. I say this as a lifelong Rupertite, this city needs to get a grip. First people keep complaining and then when talent comes around wanting to do something positive d, these woke Facebook warriors tear them down.
