When it comes to apologies ... the Northern View's Fire Coverage notes don't impress Councillor Skelton-Morven much

Last week's editorial of apology, of sorts, towards the Northern View's coverage of the March 1st fire on the city's waterfront has left one high profile critic of their work underwhelmed and unsatisfied.

As we noted last week, Northern View Publisher Todd Hamilton provided for the newspaper's talking points related to a fire storm of social media outrage over some of the wording of their initial fire coverage of a week ago.

The editorial coming with the Thursday edition and one that it would appear was designed to dampen down some of the anger found on social media.

As part of the paper's review of their coverage, Mr. Hamilton also included a story that noted that a complaint had been presented to the self-governing overview body of the National News Council.

With their review noting that the NNC decision now considered the matter resolved due to corrective action.

All of which it seems has made for a relay of information that has not satisfied Prince Rupert City Council member Reid Skelton Morven, one of many residents of the city who was quick to Social media last week to call out the paper for its coverage and to seek an apology.

The follow up commentary from Mr. Skelton-Morven notes that he remains extremely disappointed in what he calls the tone of the Northern View.

Mr. Skelton-Morven's Facebook post also notes how he views the role of the media as one which is to bring the community together and help society tackle challenges together, that by creating a platform for reconciliation.

The near week long controversy found many Rupertites weighing in on Social media, that after the paper had closed  the comments option on its website.

The majority of those who took the Social media route left comments on the Northern View Facebook page indicating their own disappointment at the paper's approach to the story.

  1. Reid Skelton Morven states media role is to bring community together. It has always been my impression the role of news media is to report facts of occurrences that have happened.

It is not the job of media to create a platform for reconciliation. Media once in a while makes mistakes same as the city did on 7th east road reconstruction. The Northern View has admitted their mistake and issued an apology. When will Reid admit the city mistake on the gone wrong road reconstruction.

    Don’t cast the first stone

  2. A mistake was made, it was brought to their attention, a statement/ apology was published and this should be the end of it.
I'm hoping that Mr. Skelton-Morven continues this sustained verve inward, toward the council he sits on, and help deal with issues of transparency.
