City cleans up intersection, sidewalks at scene of downtown fire

Clear sailing through the intersection of Sixth Street and 2nd Ave West
after City crews cleaned up the remaining debris on the road from
the early October fire downtown

Traffic began to flow through the intersection of Sixth Street and 2nd Avenue West once again this week, as the City of Prince Rupert finally cleaned up the debris field that had been left on the adjoining roadway and sidewalk following the downtown fire of October 6th.

The City crews took to their work on Tuesday, with the work completed by the end of the work day.

The debris had left both the sidewalk and roadway connecting Second and Third Avenues closed for over a month, as we noted last month, late into October the City had still not offered any update on when the remaining debris would be cleared, with the lot to join the growing number of empty spaces that pay testimony to significant fires of the past in the community.

How the intersection of Sixth Street and Second Avenue looked for much
of the last month. Tuesday city work crews cleaned up that debris on civic
property and  reopened both the roadway and sidewalk to the public

The topic of any further timeline towards a clean up for any of the remaining material on the site of the former businesses and apartments, was seemingly not something that was on the minds of the City's council membership on Monday.

That even though the actual work directed towards fire back in October did get a shout out from Councillor Wade Niesh on Monday evening, with the Councillor making note of the busy period of time recently for the city's Fire/Rescue department.

You can learn more of the work from Emergency responders across the Northwest from our archive page here.
