Adult literacy funding to be delivered across Northwest BC

A Prince Rupert organization which
works to deliver adult literacy will
be receiving funding for 2018-19

The Province of British Columbia has embarked on a 2.4 million dollar funding program, designed to deliver community adult literacy options to 75 communities over the course of the rest of 2018 and into 2019.

In the Northwest, Coast Mountain College is to be the vehicle to deliver close to 300,000 dollars in funding towards adult literacy projects in the region, an area covering the Bulkley Valley to Haida Gwaii for the program launch.

As part of a province roll out of the funding programs, Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training outlined the cope of the Province's program to address literacy issues in British Columbia.

“Too many people are struggling with daily living tasks because of limited literacy and numeracy skills,”  ... “Literacy matters because it impacts all areas of our lives. Investing in community-based adult literacy programs gives people the skills and confidence to thrive — and even form the first step on the pathway to higher education or skills training.”

Coast Mountain was provided with $299,180 towards 13 programs for eleven community partners across the region.

“The college is linked to several community-based literacy providers so that adult learners can improve their literacy, numeracy or computer skills in a community setting, such as the local public library,” .. “Many of us take literacy skills for granted, but for many people it can be an obstacle to improving their success whether at home, the workplace or in the community.” -- Ken Burt, CMTN president.

The literacy programs to be made available include one-on-one tutoring and small group training for adult learners, often delivered by volunteers. Smaller, community-based literacy programs are well situated to meet the educational needs of adult learners.

In Prince Rupert the literacy programs will be distributed by Coast Mountain College to the Change Makers Education Society, with $15,532 to be provided for both an Indigenous based program and an Adult based program.
