Skeena Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach directed a pair of questions on air travel towards Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today during the House of Commons Question period, covering two themes on aviation during the speaking opportunity.
The first was a review of and questions directed towards the PM over recently announced moves to reduce international travel and an observation that there are a few holes in that announcement; the second question was of some note for residents of Prince Rupert, as the Skeena-Bulkley MP tackled the issue of recent air service cancellation for the city.
"For months we've been calling for targeted support, tied to keeping workers employed and restarting regional routes like Prince Rupert, we keep hearing talks are happening, will the Prime Minister act before it's too late and there are no jobs left for workers to return to" -- Skeena Bulkley Valley NDP MP Taylor Bachrach on the need for more support for the Canadian airline sector.
In response, the Prime Minister focused on the support provided towards the airline sector to this point, though he made no mention of any plans yet to assist airlines such as Air Canada towards reintroducing the cancelled routes of earlier this year.
The Q and A from the House of Commons can be reviewed below:
Air Canada announced the suspension of the Prince Rupert service last month, the second time in less than a year that the city had been selected for a cessation of air service.
Since the announcement of January 13th the topic has been on the mind of local officials and community partners; though there has been little shared to date as to whether there has been any success in getting the message from Prince Rupert out to the necessary federal, provincial or corporate officials.
Or if other solutions towards alternative service providers may be in motion.
