Highway 16 Closure underway as CN avalanche control measures take place

 

Avalanche control is taking place midway between Prince Rupert and Terrace

Travellers between Prince Rupert and Terrace have a two hour rest period underway with highway 16 closed between the two communities around the 63 kilometre mark east of Prince Rupert.

The advisory was posted to the Drive BC website earlier this morning,  with the closure start time that of 10:30 AM, the delays are anticipated to last one hour as part of the two hour window which will see the road reopen again at 12:30.

"Avalanche control activity is underway between Maintenance Boundary SA27 and West of 35 Mile for 21.6 km (63 km east of Prince Rupert to 51 km west of Terrace). Until Tue Feb 23 at 12:30 PM PST. Road closed. Expect a delay up to 1 hour. Closure is for CN Avalanche Control."

The recent weather has made for some unstable conditions along the treeline areas of local mountains throughout the Northwest with the risk for the Coastal region listed as Considerable to High.
