Transits Free Ride is over, as Prince Rupert Transit/Port Edward Transit resume fare collection policies

June 1st marked the return of paying your way when you travel on BC Transit on the North Coast, with both the Prince Rupert Transit system and that of Port Edward resuming the collection of fares.

The Free Ride policy was put in place in mid-March as part of the Provincial response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was extended a number of times, with the plan to return to more normal service outlined last month.

Those who may be returning to the buses for the first time in a while may notice some changes as BC Transit continues to follow the directives of the Public Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry in COVID-19 protocols.

Among some of the changes:

Installation of a temporary vinyl panel to allow for physical distancing for the operator and customers without a full driver door.

Enhanced cleaning on buses and at BC Transit facilities.

Communication to staff and customers about physical distancing procedures

Limiting passenger capacity to support physical distancing.

Enhancing the red line for passengers to stand behind.

Vinyl panels on light duty buses.

In Prince Rupert a single fare is $2 per ride, while a range of other fare options can be accessed through Prince Rupert City Hall (call for an appointment)

In Port Edward the cost of travel is $3 per ride, the range of other options can be accessed at the Port Edward District Office as well as the store on Skeena Drive.
