City of Prince Rupert announces agreement on sale of Seal Cove land for housing

The City of Prince Rupert has announced a plan today to sell the quarry
lands to a BC development company for housing

The City of Prince Rupert has put forward an information release today that outlines how City Council has approved of public notification towards sale of land for the development of land for housing. 

With the location for the latest direction for new housing to be near the Seal Cove area adjacent to the Salt Marsh Recreation area.

The land of note the is Former Seal Cove Quary area along Bellis Road, the purchaser a company noted as Keycorp Development a British Columbia real estate development Corporation based in Langford on Vancouver Island 

The view towards the proposed housing would see an initial construction of 75 market housing units with up to 300 more to come over a four phase process of development.

No terms towards the agreement and proposed sale of the land were released as part of today's announcement.

The City also notes that as the Seal Cove option had not previously been flagged for housing development, it will require rezoning by the upcoming council membership.

This development must still undergo the public notification for property disposition, and will also go through the public process for both subdivision and rezoning from M3 Waterfront Industrial, to multi-family residential zoning. 

Although not currently identified as a potential future residential area in the City’s Official Community Plan, this location has been identified for potential mixed use development and is directly adjacent to existing residential neighbourhoods.

It is also well connected to the newly renovated trail network, park and service amenities – all priorities for housing densification. 

The process ahead, including the public notification stage will come with the installation of the newly elected Council at the Monday November 7th session,  the first for incoming Mayor Herb Pond and the council elected on October 15th.

Further details as to how the proposed development may move forward will come through those sessions in the months ahead.
